Sophs Star At Dover; Leg Three For Matchmaker Mares And Levy Males On Yonkers Docket

March 29th, 2018

Week three of Yonkers’ The George Morton Levy and the Blue Chip Matchmaker series at Yonkers so-stars the Delaware Breeders Standardbred Fund sophomore finals at Dover. We have that quartet for Thursday, then we head for more divisions of senior pacers in the Empire State.

The horses-to-watch (H2W) list suggestions remain as serious considerations for any of the bets in which you engage, so do your own handicapping and then consider our H2W selections.

GUYS AND DELAWARE DOLLS

The Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund (DSBF) finals for sophomores give state-breds a chance at a six-digit purse, as each of the four splits is worth $100,000.

First are the filly trotters, with Déjà Vu Blue bound to take most of the win pool with two wins in two starts and as the leading earner of the division. We have supported Alpine Chic before and she has come close enough in five starts to make a winning deal of this.

Colt trotters line up in the second half of the Daily Double. Bosston Cruiser has only been out twice but his place finish signaled the kind of improvement that could swipe this one over the two top earners, Super Fly and Sky Marshal while offering a better price.

A few races later filly pacers battle for this division’s state crown. Go Sandy Go gets the public nod, no doubt, but Gracefullyforgiven goes for her second win of the early season and should be dangerous to chalk players.

Lastly on the DSBF agenda are the colt pacers. Evolution Tour will attract the majority and Slick Tony should be right behind in the count. Transitioning Joy has gotten our attention before and will be tough here. We, however, look for Burn Brighter to pay best of the four.

MATCHMAKER MARES III

Friday, March 23 presents leg two of the Blue Chip Matchmaker series for pacing mares. This week, four divisions go for $40,000 each in Races 2, 4, 5, 6 and 9.

Division one
LA Delight will be the huge favorite here and will hope to make it a single-file win from start to finish. There are other speed horses here, though, and a challenge anywhere in the race could leave it open for a dismissed contender. We want to invest in that scenario and again go with Annabeth. She is in the perfect spot to take advantage of fiery quarters. As long as she doesn’t get trapped on the inside (remember, no more passing lane route) she could score at a big price.

Division two
While Shartin N makes a case of sweeping the series, we have to note that Safe From Terror, who was involved in our massive Matchmaker strike last week, made a super recovery in that race after a break, making up 10-some-odd lengths to be second. The crowd should embrace Lady Shadow again, perhaps as its second choice, even though she was unexplainably short last week as the huge choice, but looming amid this group is Regil Electra, who has yet to make her best mile in the two divisions and is bound to improve..

Division three
The favorites here, Sell A Bit N and Twinkle, will be a soft duo in this field, as there is evidence this mile could go to a more aggressive mare who may fly under the betting wire. From post 7, we find it difficult to dismiss Miss Irish Rose A. Her most recent attempt in the series is better than we expect handicappers will measure and the one before that is a toss out. She may take an early chance for a spot and suck along or get cover and sweep past tired ones. Either way, if she gets there, the toteboard goes BOOM!

Division four
Mackenzie A surprised the lot of ‘em last week, including us, who passed on her this week after supporting her when she turned up the favorite in the first leg. She is up for another great sweeping victory this time as the favorite. Dudesalady was our choice last week and she was competent behind Mackenzie A, getting third. Those two should wrap up the exacta in the nightcap division of leg three, though Dudesalady will be the valuable win ticket.

G.M. LEVY SERIES III

Each of the four horse-pace divisions in the series’ third leg is again worth $50,000 on Saturday, March 29.

Division one
Missile J doesn’t look the same as he did last season. He should have won both of his divisions in the series so far but got caught in each. Mach It So will try to wire the field from post 2 and be challenged, forcing a path late for Great Vintage. A strong older pacer still handled by Jimmy Takter, Great Vintage will only get better this season and this may put him in a better light—certainly he will have a better price.

Division two
Dr J Hanover looks to put another win in his column and has a mighty chance to do so in this field. From post 2, Always At My Place is in the right place for a perfect trip, while the rest look to be chasing “Dr J.” This is a good race for Bit Of A Legend N to do what he does best—save ground and nose the horse on the engine late for a price.

Division three
Rockin Ron goes for his third win in the series while two other leg winners will be forced to challenge his attempt at the hat trick. Last year’s “Levy” champ, Keystone Velocity, will sit in the 2 hole while Western Fame goes for a wire job from the rail. With Rockin Ron storming against Western Fame, Keystone Velocity has what he needs to win and begin a comeback as the series champ. As well, in this case he will be offering a price.

Division four
The series nightcap is a quiz, with arguments for each of the eight at the gate. Forecasting a good price and since we see this as an even contest, we give an edge to Chumlee A. Regardless of the post (which will only help the odds to rise), Chumlee A may be a bit better at cashing in purse dollars than most—at least so far this season. So why not take advantage of that possibility?

H2W Legend

Review our choices and follow the wagering at the prescribed track. These are possible contenders we have judged from reviewing races. The horses’ names are listed beneath the name of the track after the date they will be racing. The race in which they are entered (R and race number) follows. If a + is in front of a horse’s name it means it is appearing on the list for the second (and last) time because it failed to win the first time it appeared. An “ae” signals the horse is entered on the also-eligible list. If a horse is listed twice, refer to the entries on the night of the race since a horse may enter in more than one race. Types of wagering on any of the H2W listed horses are based on your judgment. If you have any questions, email us at TwinSpires.
