SOUTHLAND Preview - Sunday matinee, January 4

January 4th, 2015

For Sunday afternoon greyhound racing, Southland Park is the place to be as there are 18 exciting races on tap for the matinee. Several of these contests caught my attention as solid wagering opportunities and I've listed my choices below for you to check out. Good luck to all and thanks for reading.

Race 2 - I'm going to key the (8) PAR DRAGON in this one, a Grade B contest over the 583 yard course. I liked his effort last time out in running 4th, his race before that was a win so the form is there, just need him to get out fast, avoid early trouble and find running room for his inside running style. I will also play him in tri's and superfectas in case he's not among the frontrunners out of the box, he could still hit the money.

Race 3 - In this Grade M race over the 583 yard course, I'm going with the impressive looking (8) HAWKWOOD to win his first official start. He shows 3 schooling races with 2 wins, one by 9 lengths, the other by 6 lengths and a solid second place effort where he came from far back, beaten only by a length. This mid to wide runner is posted well and with his good early rush and strong closing move, the one to beat in my opinion.

Race 10 - This is a Grade AA contest over the 583 yard course and I am going with the (2) CHASMO'S DUTCH. He has shown remarkable consistency in his young career as evidenced by 13 top four finishes in 17 races which includes 6 wins and 4 second place efforts. A mid track runner who is both capable of going box to wire as well as coming from behind, he's had a win, two seconds and a third in his last five races, all in AA grade. You can say he's still gaining experience and while that is true, his future certainly looks bright at Southland.

Race 6 - Here we have the MoneyMaker pick of the matinee, it's a Grade C race over the 660 yard course and the choice is the (5) PJ CONJURE. She has shown decent early speed in her very young career and has a good closing run as well so with the big odds she should have here, I'm willing to give her a shot as she did win a schooling race over this distance just a few weeks back. Likes the inside and since there is other early speed in this race it would be a big help if she can hit the lid and avoid trouble right out of the box.

Good luck to everyone.
