Stormy Victoria takes on top Canadian sprinting females

October 26th, 2017

American raider Stormy Victoria will be seeking her first stakes victory when she takes on some of Canada’s best sprinting fillies and mares in the Ontario Fashion Stakes (G3) at Woodbine Oct. 28.

A French import, Stormy Victoria began her North American career at the beginning of last year and has won three allowance races. She’s run some great races at stakes level, with a second-place finish in the Athenia Stakes (G2) at Belmont Park her best effort, but he hasn’t picked up the elusive stakes victory.

She’s raced twice at Woodbine, finishing fifth in the one-mile Nassau Stakes (G2) in May last year, and third this year. The biggest worry regarding her is if the six furlongs is too short.

Four horses return from the Sweet Briar Too Stakes Sept. 17. Moonlit Promise, having her first run of the year, impressed when coming from last to beat the consistent River Maid. Southern Ring finished third after setting a fast pace, while three-time allowance winner Sugar Jones finished fifth.

Southern Ring, who is due to head to the broodmare barn at the end of the year, won this race last year and also triumphed in the six-furlong Whimsical Stakes (G3) in May. She will probably benefit for the run in the Sweet Briar Too. River Maid, winner of the seven-furlong Bessarabian (G2) last November and second in the Whimsical, should run well again.

Minks Aprise is seeking her first graded stakes win but she has performed well in this company before. She finished seventh in the 1 1/16-mile Ontario Matron Stakes (G3) in July, and should appreciate the return to six furlongs.

Code Warrior won the 6 ½-furlong Hendrie Stakes (G2) from Minks Aprise, with River Maid fifth, in June. Her two runs since were below par but she’s capable of running well here at her best.

Oct. 7 Woodbine allowance winner Northern Kiss, whose only run in stakes company was a sixth in the Ruling Angel Stakes last October, completes the field.

It’s an even field, with many chances. A repeat of her Sweet Briar Too effort would probably get Moonlit Promise home, but Southern Ring may improve with her run in that race. Stormy Victoria will have a chance if she handles the return to six furlongs, while River Maid and Minks Aprise can’t be ruled out. There could be good money for whatever wins, and for multiples.
