Sundays offer plenty of harness action
While many sports enthusiasts remained glued to the television sets on Sunday afternoon and evening watching the numerous NFL games available, harness racing fans were eager to catch the action at a trio of five-eighths mile ovals in three different states.
Sunday afternoon at Harrah's Philadelphia - still commonly referred to as Chester by harness racing fans who remember the track opening as Chester Downs - Feeling Cam Luck (George Napolitano, Jr.) eapushsily lived up to his role as the 6-5 favorite in a non-winners of $17,000 last four starts class for pacers when he scored in 1:50.2. A six-year-old Camluck gelding owned and trained by Gilbert Garcia-Herrera, Feeling Cam Luck notched his 11th win in 38 starts this year and pushed his seasonal earnings toward $120,000.
Several races later on the card, Foiled Again (Yannick Gingras) continued his farewell tour when he just lived up to his 1-9 billing and carved out modest fractions of 27.4, 57 flat, 1:25.4 and outlasted Cabbie's Delight late in 1:54.2. A 14-year-old Dragon Again gelding trained by Ron Burke and now in the final month of his Hall of Fame career, Foiled Again recorded his 10th win in 27 starts this year and now boasts 108 wins and $7.63 million banked in 329 lifetime starts. He will race this weekend in Canada then conclude his stellar career on New Year's Eve at the Meadows near Pittsburgh.
Several races later in the penultimate race on the card, Warminster A (Steve Smith) forged a 9-1 upset when he rallied second over to overtake favored Sevens Hope A in 1:52.3. A six-year-old Art Major gelding trained by Karen Garland, Warminster A rebounded from a pair of subpar performances at the Meaadowlands to record his first victory in the United States and now owns nine victories from 22 seasonal outings and sports 16 wins and over $92,000 banked from 84 career tries.
That same evening at Rosecroft Raceway, Dancing On A Star (Jackie MacLeod) posted a 5-1 upset in a non-winners of $4,000 last five starts for older pacers when he prevailed in 1:54.3. Trained by MacLeod for owner Wayne Lynch of Go Get Lost fame, Dancing On A Star recorded his second win in six starts at the meet and now owns a 4-6-4 slate and nearly $25,000 banked from 21 outings on the year. His latest score represents a new lifetime mark for the sophomore son of American Ideal.
