Tabbing value horses in the Monmouth Cup and Molly Pitcher Stakes

July 16th, 2020

A huge day of racing will take place at Monmouth Park on Saturday with five graded events on the slate, led by the $1 million Haskell (G1). I will put my focus on a pair of undercard events that look to present fine betting opportunities.

Monmouth Cup (G3)

A well-matched field of 10 will go postward in the 1 1/8-mile event on the main strip. I am going to take a swing at a price horse in a cast lacking a standout. #3 Senior Investment had a three-race win streak snapped when being outrun in the deep Westchester (G3) at Belmont Park most recently, but he fits much better in this spot and will improve on Saturday for Scott Lake.

6-year-old son of Discreetly Mine is a versatile chestnut who can prosper while up close early, or when rallying from off the early pace. Late-bloomer has never been better, and Senior Investment comes in with a pair of bullet morning drills, as well. Kentucky-bred will have Ruben Silvera in the irons.

Wager:

  • $3 Exacta Key Box: 3 with 1,2,5,6,9,10 ($36)

Molly Pitcher (G3)

A total of 11 fillies and mares will close out the sensational 14-race card in a 1 1/16-mile dirt affair. I don’t think that #3 Gotham Gala is the most talented runner in the cast by any means, but I love the value she presents for Delacour. Smart Strike 5-year-old stopped early in the Obeah S. in her 2020 debut most recently, but she is the inside pace of the field and also adds blinkers.

Kentucky-bred bay is a winner on the surface and shows a swift string of morning drills as of late. I think the Gotham Gala will clear the field early and be stubborn late at a square number. Daniel Centeno has the call.

Wager:

  • $5 WPS: #3 Gotham Gala ($15)
  • $1 Exacta: 3 with All ($10)
  • $1 Exacta: All with 3 ($10)
