Texas Red sidelined until 2016
Erich Brehm Jr. broke the news on Twitter Thursday, saying the bay son of Afleet Alex was shipped to Lexington, Kentucky, for the nuclear scan. After viewing the results, the veterinarian recommended 60-90 days of paddock exercise.
Brehm then tweeted out that Texas Red would be given the rest of the year off and return in 2016 for his four-year-old campaign.
Texas Red, who romped in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile by 6 1/2 lengths, just missed by a neck in the San Vicente S. (G2) while making his sophomore debut on February 1 but was forced to miss the spring classics after developing an abscess in his right front hoof.
The Keith Desormeaux trainee returned in July to finish second in the Dwyer S. (G3) at Belmont Park and then captured the Jim Dandy S. (G2) at Saratoga on August 1. Last out in the Travers S. (G1), the bay colt finished a subpar fifth while beaten 11 3/4 lengths under regular rider Kent Desoremeaux.
