A by-the-numbers review of the latest news and developments on the Road to the 2020 Kentucky Derby.
2.1 – The final odds offered on the “all other 3-year-olds” option in Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 2. This catch-all option was favored for the 22nd consecutive year.
2 1/2 – The margin of victory, in lengths, posted by Sole Volante in the Sam F. Davis (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs. The Patrick Biancone-trained gelding earned 10 qualification points toward the Kentucky Derby (G1), which placed him 12th on the leaderboard.
4 – The number of Derby qualification points earned by Sam F. Davis runner-up Independence Hall, which brings his total to 14. Independence Hall currently ranks fourth on the leaderboard.
7 – The number of fillies nominated to the Triple Crown, including the undefeated Martha Washington S. winner Taraz and Golden Rod (G2) winner Finite.
8 – The final odds offered on Nadal and Tiz the Law in Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 2. They were co-favorites among individual betting interests.
9 – The number of Triple Crown nominees bred by Godolphin, which tops all breeders.
13 – The number of Triple Crown nominees owned by Calumet Farm, the most of any owner.
20 – The number of Triple Crown nominees based in Japan, up from four in 2019. Leading the charge are Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushun winner Vacation and Cattleya Sho victor Dieu du Vin, who currently rank first and second, respectively, on the Japanese Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard.
23 – The total number of horses entered in the two divisions of the Risen Star (G2) on Saturday at Fair Grounds. Eleven horses will face the starter in the first division, followed by a dozen in the second.
26 – The number of Triple Crown nominees conditioned by Todd Pletcher, the most of any trainer.
:44.09 – The blazing half-mile fraction posted by Nadal, while he dueled for the lead in the San Vicente (G2) at Santa Anita. Despite the intensity of the pace, Nadal forged on to win the 7-furlong sprint in 1:22.59, which reiterates his position as a key contender for the Kentucky Derby.
347 – The number of horses nominated to the Triple Crown.
2005 – The most recent year Biancone saddled a horse in the Kentucky Derby, when he sent out Spanish Chestnut to finish 16th. Biancone previously conditioned Lion Heart to a runner-up effort in 2004 and may return to the Derby with Sole Volante.
