A by-the-numbers review of the latest news and developments on the Road to the 2020 Kentucky Derby.

The number of horses removed from Kentucky Derby consideration last week. According to Bloodhorse.com, Arkansas Derby (G1) third-place finisher Gouverneur Morris has been sidelined by a bout with colitis and will miss a couple months of training, which will derail plans to compete on the first Saturday in September.

The number of Road to the Kentucky Derby qualification points earned by Dean Martini, thanks to his determined victory in the Ohio Derby (G3).
The former claimer made an early move to seize command under jockey Ricardo Mejias, then dug deep down the stretch to prevail by three-quarters of a length. Dean Martini would rank 21st on the qualification leaderboard, but he is not nominated to the Triple Crown and will need to be supplemented in order to compete in the Derby.

The position on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard occupied by South Bend, who rallied boldly to finish second in the Ohio Derby and earned eight points.
The winner of the Street Sense S. at Churchill Downs in the fall, South Bend seemed to appreciate the return to dirt, after he competed with only modest success on grass during the winter and spring.

The total number of Road to the Kentucky Derby qualification points accumulated by Storm the Court, the champion 2-year-old male of 2019.
A wide journey in the Ohio Derby saw Storm the Court finish a distant third as the 12-5 favorite, though he did earn four points, to advance to 13th place on the leaderboard.

In a typical year, the payment required to supplement a horse to the Kentucky Derby (and the rest of the Triple Crown) if the late nomination period is missed. But the restructuring of the Triple Crown, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, has thrown norms out the window, and it’s unclear whether the $200,000 pre-Derby fee will be maintained or reduced.
