Thoughts on the Rainbow 6 mandatory payout

March 30th, 2019

The Florida Derby (G1) and a force-out of the Rainbow 6 Jackpot carryover of more than $2.6 million highlight the racing action Saturday afternoon at Gulfstream Park. Here's how I'll be playing the 20-cent Rainbow 6. Race 9 -- Maiden Special Weight John Velazquez sticks with #2 OVERBOLD (15-1) over the Todd Pletcher-trained #8 SOCIAL PARANOIA (3-1), with whom he placed in the Pilgrim (G3) when last seen in September. The former has early foot and an inside draw which might prove advantageous. First-timer #10 MACHINE LEARNING (5-1), also by Uncle Mo, debuts for the dangerous Chad Brown barn. #11 GAME DAY DECISION (15-1) showed unexpected speed last time, and effort three back in a key maiden at Keeneland suggests reverting to a closing style might better suit. Race 10 -- $100,000 Sand Springs Possessing the class edge in this one-mile grass test for fillies and mares are multiple graded stakes winner #9 PROCTORS LEDGE (4-1) and #5 VALEDICTORIAN (5-2), who has won or placed in three straight graded stakes at the meet. Race 11 -- N1X Allowance #3 GLEASON (5-1) beaten only two lengths in his March 3 return from a near 11-month layoff figures much sharper second time out. The single of this sequence. Race 12 -- N2X Allowance/Optional Claimer #4 SPACE MOUNTAIN (15-1) first off the claim here for Mike Maker. Not a huge fan of this turf in the past with only a one-for-seven mark, but is a two-time winner at this level already. #9 BRUCARITA (15-1), in contrast, has a 6-2-1-1 record over this lawn, including a solid third at this level 13 months ago. Undoubtedly in need of latest following a seven-month break and can fare better here. #8 BATTLE OF BLENHEIM (6-1) no match for subsequent Appleton (G3) winner Dr. Edgar in return from a long spell is capable of better second off the bench. Race 13 -- Pan American (G2) #1 FOCUS GROUP (4-1) developed into a graded stakes-quality animal late last year, placing in the Canadian International (G1) when the pace was against him following a restricted stakes win at Saratoga for Chad. This race totally void of pace with the exception of #3 VILLAGE KING (8-1). Perhaps Johnny V can nurse him a long way and without the pressure he had in the Mac Diarmida (G2). Recent form of #8 SOGLIO (3-1) hard to knock except for the fact he's been unlucky in photo finishes of late. Obvious danger. Race 14 -- Florida Derby (G1). #1 HIDDEN SCROLL (5-2) arguably ran the best race in the Fountain of Youth (G2), losing by only three lengths despite a relative lack of experience and setting an unsustainable pace. Potential to be a really nice one still there. #4 BOURBON WAR (7-2) uncorked his rally too late in the Fountain of Youth and missed by a diminishing three-quarters to a rival that had got the jump on him. Another quick pace woul and more ground will both work in his favor. Here's the 20-cent ticket: 2,8,10,11 with 5,9 with 3 with 4,8,9 with 1,3,8 with 1,4 = $28.80 Good luck!   Hidden Scroll: Leslie Martin/Adam Coglianese Photography
