Three Adios Elims Packed With Pacers At The Meadows; Hoosier Is Nadia Lobell Home; Freshman Firing On All Cylinders

July 17th, 2019

The 2019 season is halfway through but it is surely not all down hill from here. The two-year-olds have merely started to start, so to speak, and the division leaders have all been seriously challenged to date. With that, we take on part two of the season with a betting bankroll poised to plow on and profit through the wintry nights of the year’s end. More races for the week are at our sister blog, The Hambletonian Trail. For the rest of the season, many of our exclusively chosen frosh picks show up in features and in the TwinSpires horses-to-watch (H2W) list at the bottom of every preview blog. The sharp choices in the divisions of greenies [sic] join horses that may increase your tickets’ prices for any type of bet. Do your own handicapping and then consider our H2W selections. FROSH FROLICS OHIO FILLIES Four splits for Ohio Sires Stakes (OHSS) filly trotters perform at Scioto on July 18. Ohio’s bountiful bunch of babies is presented with $40,000 each split. Ten flashy-bred fillies are in the first OHSS field, all of them racing only for the second or third time. Rightfully so, they are led by the two-time winner Spend That Money, the sole product of Uncle Peter in the field. However, one of the duo by Triumphant Caviar—Delaware Ave—could hand her a first loss. “Caviar” has a crop that could dominate this season and this is the better of the two in this field. “Ave” hit the track with a win at first crack and could make winning a trend. The second OHSS field also races 10 and Electric Ridge is a solo product from “Caviar.” Ditto about Caviar from the preceding paragraph; let’s go with her. Ten more OHSS fillies leave the gate in division three, headed by the undefeated Globetrotting. Though she is formidable and the only progeny by Manofmanymissions, the sire we gave a profitable nod from his start in the shedrow, let’s take the second of two Caviar products—Champagne On Ice. This is her second start after finishing third. Finishing the quartet, we will make it a Caviar sweep with Evita. She will contest a victory from another Manofmanymissions gal, Hometown Honey, who starts from the outside. That helps her purpose and her price. EMPIRE BOYS NEW YORK COLTS Glamour-boy pacers line up for two New York Sires Stakes (NYSS) divisions at Vernon on July 18. The first NYSS is worth $58.700. These are big earners, led by Shake That House, an obvious favorite among the seven here. From our H2W list comes Fromthestartagain, who we backed at the Meadowlands and offered as a bet back there. He shows up here and we want him to win. Seven race for $59,800 in round two. Big and fast in the division, their trips here decide the velocity, thus their speed badges are equal. We will chance the win with Magic Joe Lindy in his fifth start. Though racing with tougher, he shows signs of wanting to take on better competitors and will pay well winning here if the craving improves him but an inch. OHIO COLTS BUCKEYE BOYS Though the glamour-boy trotting division of the Ohio Sires Stakes (OHSS) is not a stop for Hambletonian-eligible colts, local talent rises from the lucrative program. Two $50,000 miles are on the July 19 Scioto program for the boys, making for a pair of good betting races. Homer Hall will challenge Ron Burke’s two Ohio-breds in this field, making up the top three public choices. We draw your attention to Jim Pollock Jr’s Voyage To Paris. Seven times he hit the board, not in a combination as win-heavy as Homer Hall, but enough to be the fourth contender in this group and our bet. In round two of the OHSS Burke’s Wittyville will gather the most support, with Elo Hanover and Otsego on his tail. There is one colt in the mix that began at three with Hambo hopes—Shake N Bake. Though he recorded only one win, he was second four times and third twice against better horses than are here. He will be a good price from the outside post and this could be the best he does compared to those moving on to the big dance. MIDWEST HOME NADIA LOBELL Like a traveling show, The Nadia Lobell stakes has popped up in a number of track programs in the last decade. It may have settled at Hoosier, as the $150,000 affair for soph-filly pacers is part of the July 19 program. We note that one of Virgil Morgan Jr’s fillies, Lady Capulet, is in the field instead of on the H2W list for the second time. Though we certainly feel she can win, we like her in the exotic mix as well, since she is up against tougher than the state-bred bunch she has mingled with recently. Queen Of The Pride is back and will be tough as ever, even though Burke sends half of the 10 in the field to compete, including his current best of them, Rose Run Uptowngal. Also to be noticed is Rockn Philly. “Queen” could make it look easy because at her best she tops these, but she won’t offer much to backers. As an exotic key, we partner her with Lady Capulet and Rose Run Uptowngirl. THE ADIOS AMIGOS Three eliminations, each worth $25,000, are on tap at the Meadows on July 20. It’s a diverse collection of glamour-boy pacers, proving the talent is spread out in the division. The first elim will draw bettors’ attention to Workin Ona Mystery and most likely he will be the dead-on favorite. There are two others in the nine-colt field that have earned six digits. One of them is Branquinho. We backed the Ray Schnittker colt when he was second to Bettors Wish in the Art Rooney Final. Here, he may be a startling overlay, especially with two Tony Alagna colts bound to pick up support. Elimination two offers a field of eight familiar steeds, a balanced bunch among themselves. Prince Of Tides takes on some road warriors coming from stakes that trainer Ross Croghan has passed with him. From the Meadowlands Pace, for instance, there are Reigning Deo and De Los Cielos Deo, both looking for a win at three, and US Captain, ignored last week at 87-1, From softer fields come Quatrain Blue Chip, Latissiumus Hanover and Marco Beach. US Captain, regardless of last week, should be supported more this week because he winds up in a field more his gauge—except he won’t be and that’s why we will be on his side in this elim. Nine cover the field for elim three, with two division stars missing. No Captain Crunch and no Bettors Wish make the Adios a bit less interesting in headline value only. These are three good plays. Stag Party leads the colts that have not been up to snuff thus far at three but he had a good prep last week to make him look very good in this crew. He was not involved in the Meadowlands Pace but he was soaring late in a conditioner, looking afire again. With the top two absent and a price that will reward backers well, we are going to the Stag Party. H2W Legend Review our choices and follow the wagering at the prescribed track. These are possible contenders we have judged from reviewing races. The horses’ names are listed beneath the name of the track after the date they will be racing. The race in which they are entered (R and race number) follows. If a + is in front of a horse’s name it means it is appearing on the list for the second (and last) time because it failed to win the first time it appeared. An “ae” signals the horse is entered on the also-eligible list. If a horse is listed twice, refer to the entries on the night of the race since a horse may enter in more than one race. Types of wagering on any of the H2W listed horses are based on your judgment. If you have any questions, email us at TwinSpires.
