Thunderous Wins At Yonkers Pay $123 and $43; Features Yield Fair-Odds Scores; Protruding Place Prices Presented

In last week’s Update we reported on Yonkers Raceway’s highest win price of the season, paying 72-1. We might not have had that winner but on March 4 at Yonkers we picked up a three-digit winner, Queenace Blue Chip and complemented that with a 20-1 winner at Yonkers later that week. “Queenace” becomes the top candidate for the 2019 Twinspires Harness Bettors’ Horse Of The Year. Check out another all-around good week below: Thursday, March 7 Another multi-exotic attack complemented win, place and show in five races at Saratoga in the afternoon. As usual at the New York oval, the battle to beat the favorites was immediately in play as the quintet began. The public ego shone in the first event when their choice won easily. Our start was impressive as 102-1 Xenia Onatop finished fourth. On the other hand, our other contender, Lady Elvis (10-1) never put a step into her mile, finishing eighth. The Pick 5 died right there. In Race 2 we had our first of two Saratoga winners of the day with our solo choice, All Speed Rising ($10.80, $4.00, $2.80). Another favorite won the third event. We checked in sixth with The Time To Win (7-1). A 13-1 winner shook the exotics in the next event, while we finished fifth with Aggressive (7-1). Finally, we posted our second winner of the quintet, who wound up the public choice as well. She’s My Rock ($3.70, $2.60, $2.50) was our only chance of two we supported. Our other contender, Open Table (7-2) broke, recovered, then suffered another jump from broken equipment, galloping home. Friday, March 8 Yonkers once again set the scene for a hefty-priced winner on the week. Our judgment was correct in the evening’s lucrative filly-and-mare Open pace; we advertised Write Me A Song ($43.20, $17.60, $7.10) and she came through defeating the big favorite by a nose. Two Adam Short-trained steeds at Miami put an end to The Short List (SL). We won the second SL entry with Mosee Terror ($5.80, $3.60, $3.40). In the third SL on the program we were nipped for the win with Miss Meeko ($2.20, $2.40). Though we will closely follow Short’s entries for the remainder of Miami season, The Short List is over for 2019 at the Ohio oval. Saturday, March 9 Our only feature took place at the Meadowlands with a winner, Solo Story ($14.80, $6.60, $4.60), while the other contender, Griffon Hanover (6-5) finished fourth. H2W LIST RESULTS The H2W results list across-the-board prices. Also, exactas listed are included when a H2W horse finishes second with a race favorite or the first two finishers making up the exacta are H2W horses (an asterisk appears when both horses were listed to complete a cold exacta). The note “ok” determines that prices published are correct even when a show price exceeds a place price or any or all of the prices are the same. This week, there were 61 active horses (a 13-percent win hit rate and a 39-percent ATB [across-the-board] hit rate). Austin Siegelman won five races on the March 7 program at Monticello. He drove in eight of the nine races on the day. It cost $16.00 to support Siegelman with $2.00 win bets in each of the races he drove. That investment returned $28.30, a profit of $12.30. Siegelman’s skein was profitable due to one winner paying $12.60; the others paid $5.70 or less and were all public choices. Spring cannot be far behind because Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs is poised to start the 2019 season. Pocono’s first program of the season is on Saturday, March 16. The usual fast-class events for trotters and pacers are on the first card, along with first-round action in the new $850,000 Secretary Series, a multi-level affair over the first two months of the Pocono schedule. Opening night finds male pacers going in first-leg divisions of the Secretary’s Series action. The H2W will include horses throughout the season. The number of three-year-olds sustained to The Meadowlands Pace increased by more than 50 percent in 2019 with 63 making the February payment as opposed to 40 last year. Among those in the cast are award-winning freshman colt Captain Crunch. He heads a talented returning crop that includes another son of Captaintreacherous, Captain Ahab, as well as Workin On A Mystery, Reigning Deo and Proof. The Mistletoe Shalee also saw a solid rise in entries, going from 35 in 2018 to 47 this year. Award-winning freshman filly Warrawee Ubeaut, the fastest two-year-old in harness racing history, and award winner Tall Drink Hanover also hope to make it to the dance.
