Trotters take center stage at Harrington on Wednesday
While rain showers throughout the Mid-Atlantic region may have turned numerous racing surfaces sloppy by post time, the Harrington Raceway half-mile oval was instantly made to feel renewed when it offered a quartet of events for trotters and had one that honored one special group.
Just past the midway point of the card, Myclaimtovictory (Ross Wolfenden) won a non-winners of $3,501 last five starts class for trotters as the 3-2 favorite in 1:58.1. A six-year-old Earl of Stormont gelding trained by Tom Kirby for owner Barbara Kirby, Myclaimtovictory recorded his second win from 12 starts this year and posted his 18th victory from 120 career tries and pushed his lifetime earnings past $135,000. More importantly he took home the ceremonial blanket for capturing the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition Pink Night At The Races annual feature.
Two races earlier in the featured $16,000 Open Handicap for older trotters, Royal Becca J (Jack Parker, Jr.) rebounded from an early miscue in the Shiaway St. Pat final at the Meadowlands five nights earlier to live up to his role as the 6-5 favorite when he gained command early and prevailed by over a length in 1:56. A six-year-old RC Royalty gelding trained by Carol Jamieson-Parker for owner James D. Moore III, Royal Becca J now owns a 3-3-1 slate and $50,000 bankroll from 13 starts this year and a 19-24-13 slate and over $270,000 earned from 103 career outings.
Two races earlier in a non-winners of $9,501 last five starts class for trotters, Lucky Ten K (Montrell Teague) overcame a long, first over bid to score by a neck as an overlooked 10-1 shot in 1:57.1. A six-year-old Lucky Chucky gelding owned and trained by Jenny Bier, Lucky Ten K recorded his fourth win in 12 starts this year and now owns a 13-9-13 slate and over $102,000 banked from 108 career tries after a gritty performance on Wednesday.
Then two races earlier, Summajestic (Victor Kirby) lived up to his role as the 4-5 favorite in a non-winners of $2,001 last five starts for trotters when he overcame post six and gained command before the opener in 28.1, maintained an honest tempo by the half in 58.4 and three-quarters in 1:28.3 and held safe Kent County (Allan Davis) for a neck victory in 1:58. A five-year-old Majestic Son gelding owned and trained by Tate Lewis, Jr., Summajestic notched his third win from 10 starts this year and now owns a 9-8-7 slate and $68,500 banked from 64 career outings.
Earlier that morning at Harrington, Arque Hanover (Jonathan Roberts) signaled his readiness for a return to the races when he romped home 17 lengths in 1:55.2 in a qualifier. Trained by Dylan Davis, Arque Hanover has been a fixture in the Open Handicap for pacers at Harrington the previous two seasons and his qualifying score on Wednesday perhaps indicated that a return to the top class is close at hand.
That same morning at Pocono Downs in Pennsylvania, Tequila Monday (Anthony Napolitano) signified her readiness for a return to the overnight events when she scored by five lengths in 1:54.4. A four-year-old, Maryland-bred daughter of American Ideal trained by Hunter Oakes, Tequila Monday has enjoyed ample success in New York Sire Stakes and several open stakes in her career and looks ready to tackle older mares sometime this spring.
That same morning at Rosecroft Raceway in Maryland, Makin Money Fast (Frank Milby) romped home 18 lengths clear in 1:55 in the first qualifier, Open fixture Kiss A Dragon (Jason Green) prevailed by six lengths in 1:55.3 in another qualifier for pacers and What That Is (Brian Burton) overcame a first over bid to edge Saint Simeon in a qualifier for trotters in 1:57.3. Makin Money Fast is a three-year-old son of Dontloseyourtdayjob trained by Jamie Vance.
