When and Where to Watch the 2018 Kentucky Derby

By now, you’re probably aware that there’s a pretty big horse race coming up on May 5th in Louisville, Kentucky.

The must-see event is the 144th running of the $2 million Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (gr. I), a 1 ¼-mile race that pits the best three-year-old Thoroughbreds in North America against each other in a battle for supremacy.

Kentucky Derby Post Position Draw

Who will draw the dreaded post position one? Who will land in gate seventeen, the only post that hasn’t produced a Derby winner? On May 1st, visit the Kentucky Derby Twitter or Facebook pages at 11:00 a.m. Eastern to watch the post position draw live.

Kentucky Oaks

Don’t forget about the fillies! On May 4th, one day prior to the Kentucky Derby, a top-notch field of three-year-old fillies will square off in the $1 million Longines Kentucky Oaks (gr. I). Coverage of the Oaks runs from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Eastern on NBCSN. Several other graded stakes races, including the prestigious La Troienne Stakes (gr. I) featuring 2017 Kentucky Oaks winner Abel Tasman, will be shown on a separate NBCSN broadcast running from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Kentucky Derby Undercard Races

The Kentucky Derby isn’t the only noteworthy race on May 5th at Churchill Downs—six other graded stakes races will be held as well, including the Old Forester Turf Classic (gr. I) and the Humana Distaff (gr. I). The racing action will kick off at 12:00 p.m. Eastern on NBCSN and continue through 2:30 p.m.

Kentucky Derby

Here’s the broadcast you’ve been waiting for! The Kentucky Derby will be shown live on NBC from 2:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Eastern. Post time for the Derby is scheduled for 6:46 p.m., so if you’re busy making bets and don’t want to miss the race, that’s the time to keep in mind.
