Wednesday harness preview 1/14/15
While the Wednesday cards at most harness tracks might have limited appeal to many standardbred racing fans and players, the midweek cards at Dover Downs tend to highlight the top trotters on the Delaware circuit and occasionally several of the races produce genuine value plays.
In fact, the third race on the card at Dover this Wednesday, a non-winners of four races or $17,500 lifetime class for younger trotters perhaps someday hoping to earn a berth in the Open ranks, features a youthful sort whose last race was much better than it looked on paper. Someway Same Hall (Victor Kirby) rallied from well off the pace last week to finish second, beaten four lengths by Razor Ramone (Ron Pierce) in 1:57.4 at this level. But Razor Ramone was able to cruise past the half in 1:00 flat and then sprinted the back half in 57.4 en route to drawing off and earning a promotion into the non-winners of five class later this evening.
Someway Same Hall had started from post nine in the second tier and got into the flow second over and was hoping to launch a rally from an improbable spot. His cover was okay, but once Razor Ramone got to the half in 1:00 the race was virtually over and few trotters can close ground into a 57.4 back half while racing from well off the pace. The fact that Someway Same Hall rallied to easily finish second despite the moderate cover, slow opening splits and rapid back half indicates that this Leigh Raymer trainee is sitting on a win or two at this oval.
Several races later in the 10th, the winners over class for trotters that rates as the feature since the Open did not fill, look for Tough Mac (Corey Callahan) to continue his winning ways while stepping up in class. Last week this Dylan Davis trainee rolled by the midway mark in 56.1 and then promptly drew off to score by seven lengths in 1:53 in a clocking that was considerably faster than the one that Tirade Hanover posted while taking the Open in 1:54.3 that evening. Tough Mac makes the slight climb from the non-winners of $12,001 last six class into the winners over, but gets the rail and should be tough to overhaul in the lane.
Then two races later in the 12th, a $15/20,000 claiming handicap for trotters, give My Heidi (Corey Callahan) an immediate chance at redemption following her third-place effort as the 6-5 favorite against similar last week. In a race that includes three horses in for the $20,000 tag who were given the three outside posts, My Heidi should be able to control the tempo from the outset again this week. The difference being that My Heidi should be able to get a breather by the half and not be forced to roll by the midway mark in 57.4 as she did a week ago and that should enable this trotter to outlast the late bids of those three rivals in for the higher tag.
