Wednesday qualifiers signal start of Rosecroft winter-spring meet
Wednesday afternoon, just before the vaunted polar vortex could make its presence felt throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, Rosecroft Raceway hosted seven qualifiers as the various trotters and pacers took their first strides toward appearing in the upcoming winter-spring meet that runs two nights per week February 6 through May 18.
In the first of the seven qualifiers on Wednesday afternoon, Always A Rose (Jared Moyer) benefited from a lively early tempo and second over cover to score by a length in 1:59.3. A five-year-old Always A Virgin mare trained by Arlene Cameron, Always A Rose rallied from well off the pace to edge the pocket sitting Winter Games (Richard Still) and the late closing Ms Seton for a length tally.
Then one race later in a compact field of four trotters, Interover (Moyer) led a 1-2-3 finish for Cameron when she benefited from a two-hole trip and edged clear late to a two-length score in 2:02.4. Several races later in another qualifier for trotters, Chapter And Ruth (John Wagner) prevailed by a nose in 2:02 flat for Cameron.
In the other handful of qualifiers for pacers, Dancin Rebel (Roger Plante, Jr.) overhauled Anderson Valley late for a neck triumph in 1:59.3; Mr Big Bucks (Frank Milby), who won the last race of the fall meet on December 16 for trainer Jason Walters, defeated B A Rocket by four lengths in 1:59.3; Lil Johnny (Milby) rallied from well off the pace and widest of all to score in 1:58.3 for Walters then Rocktavius (Still), a fixture in the top class throughout the spring and fall meets in 2018, benefited from a two-hole trip to defeat Adios Muchachos in 1:58.2 for trainer Megan Roberts.
Rosecroft will conduct its winter-spring meet Feb. 6-May 18 on a two-night-per-week schedule of every Wednesday and Sunday. The lone exceptions will be Kentucky Derby Day (Saturday, May 4) and Preakness Day (Sat., May 18) when the five-eighths mile oval will present live racing on Saturday evening instead of Sunday. Post time on Wednesdays is slated from 6:40, while the Sunday cards will get under way at 4:40. The last two Saturday programs will get under way around 7 p.m.
