Woodbine track update: Oct. 13, 2021

Sunday's Woodbine card features two graded stakes, the E. P. Taylor S. (G1) for turf route mares and the Nearctic S. (G2) for older turf sprinters.

With almost two months left in the meet, let's dive into some meaningful trends for jockeys and trainers.

Jockeys

Kazushi Kimura leads the jockey standings with 91 wins, though he also has by far the most starts (485 starts, 19% win rate). His next closest competitors are Rafael Hernandez (62 wins, 350 starts, 18%), Emma-Jayne Wilson (60 wins, 377 starts, 16%), and Justin Stein (56 wins, 380 starts, 15%).

Kimura has been particularly strong around two turns on the all-weather track. He leads all riders in Tapeta route wins (17 wins, 77 starts, 22%), with a +32% ROI. Wilson (15 wins, 65 starts, 23%, +39% ROI) also shines in routes on the synthetic.

In sprints on Tapeta, Woodbine veteran Patrick Husbands (25 wins, 112 starts, 22%, +37% ROI) is getting the job done at a price.

Daisuke Fukumoto has shined in turf routes. His 10 wins (41 starts, 24%) put him behind everyone but Hernandez, who has one more win but 30 more starts. Fukumoto has a +47% ROI in turf routes this Woodbine meet, as well.

Trainers

Mark Casse has a romping lead in the trainer standings at Woodbine. His 84 wins (386 starts, 22%) are more than twice as many as his closest competitor, Kevin Attard (37 wins, 211 starts, 18%).

In long races on grass, watch out when Vito Armata enters. He has four wins from just seven turf route starts (57%, +429% ROI). Only Casse and Roger Attfield have more turf route wins, and both have far more starts.

In routes on the Tapeta main track, make sure to watch for Catherine Day Phillips. She has six wins in Tapeta routes (22 starts, 27%), which is more than all but Casse and Attard, who both have far more starts. And, with a +192% ROI in two-turn races on the synthetic this meet, the prices are great.

With first-time starters, Casse (seven wins, 31 starts, 23%, -8% ROI) has been sharp, as usual. But make sure to watch Attfield (two wins, seven starts, 29%, 57% in the money, +66% ROI), as he has been successful with his select few debut runners.
