Yonkers hosts second round of Blue Chip Matchmaker series action
Two days after a belated winter storm wreaked havoc on the "Big Apple" on the second day of spring, Yonkers Raceway hosted the second leg of the Blue Chip Matchmaker Series for free-for-all pacing fillies and mares over a fast track with little remnants of snow visible.
In the opening leg of the second round of Blue Chip Matchmaker Series action, series newcomer Wishy Washy Girl (Jason Bartlett) benefited from a rail draw and gained command early and held safe even-money choice Twinkle (Eric Goodell) to score in 1:54.2 as the 7-5 second choice. A Roll With Joe mare trained by Richard Banca, Wishy Washy Girl stepped into the BCMM off a sharp score against conditioned mares last week and edged opening round winner Twinkle for her second straight tally and first in the series.
Then two races later on the card in the second BCMM second round split, Shartin N (Tim Tetrick) easily lived up to her role as the 3-20 favorite from post four when she gained command just past a 27.1 opener, got a breather by the half in 57.1, raced unpressed down the backside and through the far turn and held safe the pocket-sitting Clear Idea (Mark Macdonald) for a two-length score in 1:53.2.
A five-year-old Tintin In America mare trained by Jim King, Jr. for owners Richard Poillucci and Jo Ann Looney-King, Shartin N notched her second straight victory in the BCMM series and her third straight score overall and she now owns six wins in seven starts this year and 13 victories in 20 career outings. Maryland-breds Clear Idea and Vintage Babe finished second and third, respectively, to keep their hopes alive of reaching the final or consolation.
One race later on the card, L A Delight (Yannick Gingras) made a favorable impression in her BCMM series debut when she gained command before the quarter, rolled by the half in 56.3, the held safe Mach It A Par (Bartlett) for a length score in 1:53.2. A five-year-old Bettor's Delight mare trained by Nancy Johannson of JK She's A Lady fame, L A Delight was scratched sick from the series opener one week earlier but joined the fray in sharp fashion on Friday.
Then one race later in the weakest second round split, Motu Moonbeam N (Brent Holland) rallied from well off the pace to forge a 36-1 upset in 1:54.3. A six-year-old Bettor's Delight mare trained by Paul Blumenfeld, Motu Moonbeam N emerged from beneath the shadows of Shartin N and Mach It A Par - the last two mares to beat her at Yonkers - to notch her first win in two tries in the series and her third victory in 10 seasonal outings.
Then three races later in the last BCMM second round division, defending final champ Mackenzie A (Jordan Stratton) benefited from a very lively early tempo and a second over journey to easily overhauled 2-5 choice Lady Shadow (Bartlett) for a two-length score in 1:53.1. Overlooked at 7-1 after a listless effort in the opener at 8-5, Mackenzie A joined the list of BCMM leg winners and looms a serious threat to repeat for trainer Peter Tritton.
