Yonkers and Meadowlands offer solid Saturday night cards
On the same evening that Laurel Park hosted its Winter Racing Carnival featuring a pair of lucrative graded stakes, both Yonkers Raceway and the Meadowlands had solid programs highlighted by a bevy of overnight events.
In one of the early races on the Yonkers card, Tyber Tyke (George Brennan) lived up to his role as the 7-5 favorite in the non-winners of $20,000 last five starts class when he gained command before the opener, got a breather by the half in 57.2, raced unpressed by three-quarters and then held safe Aberdeen Hanover (Shaun Vallee) and Chaching Hanover (Jordan Stratton) to score by over a length in 1:54.
A 10-year-old Panspacificflight gelding trained by Scott Didomenico, Tyber Tyke notched his second straight tally and second win from four starts this year and he now owns 44 wins and $555,000 banked from 210 career tries. Aberdeen Hanover raced well in defeat following a long, first over bid and gets to stay at this level next week.
Then one race later in another non-winners of $20,000 last five starts class for pacers, Ourlittlegeneral A (Daniel Dube) lived up to his role as the 3-5 favorite when he quarter moved to command, got a breather by the half in 59.1, met token pressure down the backside and through the far turn and held sway through the lane to score in 1:56. A six-year-old Mach Three stallion trained by Rene Allard, Ourlittlegeneral A notched his second straight score and 19 wins from 47 career outings.
Then two races later in the $35,000 Preferred Handicap for pacers, Shneonucrydiamnd A (Jim Marohn, Jr.) overcame an extended first over bid into a sharp back after favored Anythingforlove A (Joe Bongiorno) got a breather by the half in 58.2, grinded down the leader on the far turn and surged past the favorite late for a length score in 1:54.1. A six-year-old Somebeachsomewhere gelding trained by Ross Croghan, Shneonucrzydiamnd A notched his third straight score and recorded his 15th win from 66 career tries and likely earned a berth in the Open Handicap next weekend.
Speaking of the $44,000 Open Handicap for pacers, one race later in the featured class of the week Don Domingo N (Brennan) rallied from well off the pace and second over to overhaul favored Bettors Fire N (Ron Cushing) late for a length score in 1:54.2. A seven-year-old American Ideal gelding trained by Lance Hudson, Don Domingo N notched his fifth win in six starts this year and now owns 12 victories from 37 career outings and appears likely header to the prestigious George Morton Levy Memorial Series next month.
Runner-up Bettors Fire N settled the second after carving out modest fractions and looks destined for the Levy as well. Former Levy champion Bit Of A Legend N (Stratton) stayed in after getting away third and finished well in his seasonal debut for Peter Tritton. Somewhere In L A (Bartlett) raced well first over in his seasonal debut and will probably need a few more starts in order to be in peak condition for the Levy.
Right at the midway point of the Meadowlands card, Bushwacker (Andrew McCarthy) benefited a hint of class relief and prevailed late as the 4-1 third choice in a non-winners of $8,500 last five starts class for pacers. An eight-year-old Rocknroll Hanover gelding trained by Chris Ryder, Bushwacker notched his first win from six starts this year and now sports 23 wins and over $700,000 banked from 133 career outings after stopping the timer in 1:52.
