Tonalist Headlines Peter Pan at Belmont Park

Tonalist, whose Kentucky Derby prospects were dashed after developing a lung infection prior to the Wood Memorial in early April, could earn a ticket to the third leg of the Triple Crown with a strong performance in the Grade 2, $200,000 Peter Pan at Belmont Park on Saturday for trainer Christophe Clement.

A long-time prep for the Belmont Stakes, scheduled this year for June 7, the Peter Pan has attracted a field of seven to go 1 1/8 miles.

Sunday will play host to a trio of graded runs at Belmont, led by the $400,000 Man o’War S. (G1). A fine group is assembling for this turf marathon in what could be a fine betting race.  Imagining is a four-time winner on the Belmont lawn and will look to break through at this level for Shug McGaughey.

Grade 1 queen Dreaming of Julia will make her first start in more than a year when leading a sharp field in the $250,000 Ruffian S. (G2). Trained by Todd Pletcher, the four-year-old ran against the best of her division for two years and she often fires big while fresh, making her possibly the one to beat in her first with elders.

In the $150,000 Westchester S. (G3), reigning Belmont S. (G1) champ and leading handicap horse Palace Malice looks like a standout in his prep for the Met Mile (G1). The Todd Pletcher-trained son of Curlin has been especially impressive from a pair of tries this campaign and will be impossible to beat with his best on the distance cut back.
