$1,250,000 Whitney Stakes (G1) at Saratoga

The $1,250,000 Whitney Stakes headlines a card that features five stakes races this Saturday at Saratoga Race Course.

Entered in the 1 1/8 mile dirt race for three-year-olds and up are some of the sport's elite thoroughbreds, including ML favorite Honor Code (3-1), 2014 Belmont Stakes winner Tonalist (4-1), Stephen Foster H. winner Noble Bird (5-1), and last year's Whitney winner, Moreno (12-1). The extremely deep field features a total of seven G1 winners.

4   Liam's Map 6/1   One of Today's Best Bets!
7   Lea 9/2   Won the Donn Handicap (G1) at Gulfstream Park going this distance last year then went to the sidelines. He returned this year with a win in a grade three then just missed in the Donn next time out. After running third in the Dubai World Cup (G1), he came back to run a career-best race in the Foster (G1) when second to NOBLE BIRD.
9   Wicked Strong 20/1   Horse for the course won the Jim Dandy (G2) here last year then just missed in the Travers Stakes (G1) when he led every step of the stretch but the last. After falling in the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) last September, he went to the sidelines before returning in a grade two stakes race going a one turn mile at Gulfstream Park where he was only beaten a length by HONOR CODE and top sprinter PRIVATE ZONE. In the Excelsior (G3), he ran inexplicably bad and then lost all chance in the Met Mile when wiped at the start. I liked his turf race last out when he ran on gamely to be second while covering his last six furlongs in 1:08.36 seconds.
1   Honor Code 3/1   Hard horse to figure since he does his best running going one turn and the winning profile for two-turn races on the dirt here does not favor deep closers. Still, he draws the rail and gets in at equal weight against most of these. He broke his maiden here on a sloppy track first time out after being 22 lengths behind and he will be flying again today with Javier Castellano.
