The Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the American Triple Crown for three-year-olds Thoroughbreds, is a premium sporting event that takes place at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York in Long Island, just outside of New York City.
The 2015 and 2018 Triple Crown trail found thrilling success with the feats of American Pharoah and Justify BOTH winning the elusive crown with three jewels.
The 2014 edition, featuring a Triple Crown bid by California Chrome, drew an enormous crowd of 102,199, third largest in the 147-year history of the Belmont Stakes, and NYRA officials elected to limit 2015 attendance to 100,000 people after American Pharoah captured the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.
A Zayat Stables homebred trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Victor Espinoza, American Pharoah became the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years when posting a smashing 5 ½-length victory in the 2015 Belmont Stakes. He completed the 1 ½-mile distance in 2:26.65, the second-fastest clocking ever by a Triple Crown winner.
The stakes are much higher when a Triple Crown is on the line at Belmont Park, but the Belmont Stakes remains an attractive sporting event regardless. It’s one of the most prestigious races in the United States, offering a lucrative $1.5 million purse, and a strong field is typically guaranteed for the American “classic.”

And general admission to the grounds is affordable ($10 grandstand, $30 clubhouse), with nearly 10,000 free seats available throughout the facility as well as plenty of space throughout the picnic area in the backyard of the track.
