Ack Ack Stakes Race History
The Ack Ack Stakes is a Grade III thoroughbred horse race run at Churchill Downs in Kentucky. Inaugurated in 1991 as the Ack Ack Handicap, the race was named after Hall of Fame inductee Ack Ack, the 1971 U.S. Horse of the Year that is recognized among the top 100 U.S. racehorses in the 20th century.
At its current distance (1 mile), noted Louisiana Derby winner Pants on Fire holds the speed record after turning in a time of 1:33.78 in 2013. While no horse has won the race more than once, jockey Calvin Borel has notched a record four wins (1996, 1998, 1999, 2004).
As part of the Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" Challenge Series, the winner automatically qualifies for the Breeders' Dirt Mile.
