Beverly D. Stakes Race History
The Beverly D. Stakes is a Grade II thoroughbred horse race run at Churchill Downs in Kentucky. Inaugurated in 1987, the race was previously held at Arlington Park in support of the Arlington Million race program before its closure in 2021. When Churchill Downs Inc. (who previously owned Arlington Park) announced the race would be moving to their track, they also shortened the race from 1 3/16th miles to 1 1/8th miles for 2022. As part of an agreement reached between Churchill Downs and the American Graded Stakes Committee, the race was moved to Colonial Downs in Virginia, and the race was returned to its original distance.
The Beverly D. Stakes is well known for attracting the best female turf runners in the country. Several past winners went on to be crowned American Champion, including Flawlessly (1993), Hatoof (1994), Possibly Perfect (1995), Golden Apples (2002), Stacelita (2011), Dank (2013), and Sistercharlie (2018 & 2019).
Both Ryan Moore (2013, 2014, 2021) and Kent Desormeaux (1992, 2008, 2009) share the record for most wins by a jockey with 3 each, while trainer Chad Brown has notched a record 6 wins of his own (2011, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019).
As part of the Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" Challenge Series, the winner automatically qualifies for the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf.
