Flying Five Stakes Race History

The Flying Five Stakes is a Group I horse race run each year at Curragh Racecourse in Kildare, Ireland during the Irish Champions Weekend. Formerly held at Phoenix Park, the race was promoted to Group III status in 1988 before being transferred to Leopardstown in 1991. In 2002, the race was again moved to its current home and upgraded to Group II before being downgraded back to Group III in 2004. After being reinstated as a Group II race in 2015, the race was finally upgraded to Group I status in 2018, becoming the first Group I race in Ireland open to three year olds and older.

Since 1985, the most successful horse has been Benbaun, who notched 3 consecutive victories between 2005 and 2007. Additionally, jockey Michael Kinane has won the race a record six times in that same timeframe, with is first coming in 1985 and his most recent coming in 2004.

The race is part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series, offering the winners automatic entry into the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.
