International Stakes Race History
The International Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race run each year at York Racecourse in York, England. Inaugurated in 1972, the race is contested at 2,063 metres and takes place in late August.
The race was initially conceptualized by Major Leslie Petch, York's Clerk of the Course. Unfortunately, Petch had to retire due to poor health by the time the race was first run. The inaugural winner was Roberto, the American-bred, Irish-trained stallion who was coming off of an incredibly narrow victory at the Epsom Derby (quite literally winning by a nose). Coming in second that year was the legendary Brigadier Gerard, suffering the first and only defeat in his storied career.
With his seventh victory in 2024, Aidan O'Brien (2000, 2008, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2019, 2024) became the all-time winningest trainer, surpassing the legendary Sir Michael Stoute. In 2023, Frankie Dettori (1996, 1997, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2023) earned a record setting sixth win, breaking a tie with flat racing great Lester Piggott.
As part of the Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" Challenge Series, the winner automatically qualifies for the Breeders' Cup Classic.
