Jessamine Stakes Race History
The Jessamine Stakes is a Grade II horse race run each year at Keeneland Race Course in Kentucky. Inaugurated in 1991 as the Green River Stakes, the event was renamed in 2003 to the Jessamine County Stakes, a county adjacent to the Lexington-Fayette metropolitan area the race calls home. In 2005, the race was further renamed to the Jessamine Stakes.
Perhaps the most notable previous winner of the Jessamine Stakes is Perfect Sting, who won the 1998 edition. That win kicked off a successful career for the mare, who would go on to win 14 of her 21 starts, including the 2000 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf. That year she was also named American Champion Female Turf Horse. In 2001, she would retire to broodmare duty with career earnings of $2,202,042.
Currently it is Pat Day who owns the record for most wins by a jockey with his five victories, and there are two trainers tied for most wins as both Kenneth G. McPeek and Todd Pletcher both have four wins on their resume.
As part of the Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" Challenge Series, winners of the race gain automatic entry into the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.
