Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe Race History
The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is Group I flat thoroughbred horse race run each year at the Longchamp Racecourse in Paris, France. Inaugurated in 1920 and known among racing fans as "the Arc", the race is the most prestigious all-aged race in Europe and offers the second highest turf race purse in the world (behind The Everest, run at the Randwick Racecourse in Australia).
The previous winners of the Arc are a "who's who" of the most accomplished horses in racing history. Some of the notable winners in recent history include:
- Enable (2017,2018) - 2018 Breeders' Cup Turf winner and two time Cartier Horse of the Year (2017,2019)
- Damedream (2011) - 2011 European Champion Three-year-old Filly
- Sea of Stars (2009) - 2009 Epsom Derby, 2000 Guineas and Eclipse Stakes winner (First colt to achieve the treble since 1989)
- Bago (2004) - 2004 European Champion 3-Yr-Old Colt
Frankie Dettori currently holds the record for most wins by a jockey with six wins. His first win came in 1995 and his most recent wins came with back-to-back victories with Enable in 2017 and 2018.
As part of the Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" Challenge Series, the winner automatically qualifies for the Breeders' Cup Turf.
