Santa Anita Sprint Championship Race History
The Santa Anita Sprint Championship is a Grade I horse race run at Santa Anita Park. Originally run as the Ancient Title Stakes in honor of the two time horse of the year and Hall of Famer inductee, the race was renamed in 2012. A handful of past winners have been recognized as some of the best sprinters in racing, including:
- Roy H (2017 & 2018) - Two time American Champion Sprint Horse and Breeders' Cup Sprint winner in 2017 and 2018
- Points Offthebench (2013) - 2013 American Champion Sprint Horse
- Kona Gold (2000) - 2000 American Champion Sprint Horse and Breeders' Cup Sprint winner
- Groovy (1986) - 1987 American Champion Sprint Horse
WIth his back to back wins, Roy H is the only horse to have won the race multiple times. Ed Delahoussaye and Kent J. Desormeaux both share the record for most wins by a jockey with four wins each, while John W. Sadler is the winningest trainer in the races history with four wins to his name.
The race grants winners an automatic bid to race in the Breeders' Cup Sprint as part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series.
