Suburban Stakes Race History
The Suburban Stakes is a Grade II race run each year at Belmont Park in Elmont, NY. First run in 1884, the race is noted for previously being one of the legs of the New York Handicap Triple, along with the Metropolitan Handicap and the Brooklyn Handicap. Only four horses have won the Triple: Whisk Broom II (1913), Tom Fool (1953), Kelso (1961), and Fit to Fight (1984). As both the Metropolitan Handicap and Brooklyn Handicap are now run on Belmont Stakes day, achieving the Triple is now an impossibility.
Winners of the Suburban Stakes include an eye-popping number of former champions, hall of famers, and other notable horses. Those include Imp, Gold Heels, Friar Rock, Paul Jones, Crusader, Head Play, Eight Thirty, Devil Driver, Armed, Assault, Mineshaft, Devil His Due, Easy Goer and many more!
As part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series, winners of the race gain automatic entry into the Breeders' Cup Classic.
