Vosburgh Stakes Race History
The Vosburgh Stakes is a Grade II race run each year at Belmont Park in New York (Although it is currently being held at Aqueduct while Bemont conducts track improvements). The race was named in honor of Walter S. Vosburgh, the famed turf historian and official handicapper for The Jockey Club in the early 19th century. From its inauguration in 1940 to 2002, it was run at seven furlongs but in 2003 it was run at 6 1/2 furlongs for just that year only. Starting in 2004, the race was contested at 6 furlongs, but ultimately reverted back to 7 furlongs in 2022.
Notable past winners include Hall of Fame inductee Bold Ruler (1957), who would go on to win the Preakness that year as part of a U.S. 3-Year-Old Champion Male and American Horse of the Year winning season and Affectionately (1964), another Hall of Fame inductee ranked one of the top 100 racehorses of the 20th Century.
Dr. Fager won the race back to back in 1967 and 1968, with his second win coming as part of what is regarded as one of the single greatest racing seasons of all time. In that year, Dr. Fager became the only horse to hold four American titles at once (Champion Sprint Horse, Male Turf Horse, Older Male Horse and Horse of the Year). Other important past winners include Forego (1974), My Juliet (1976), Groovy (1987), Housebuster (1991), Langfuhr (1996), and Artax (1999).
Currently there are five horses tied for most wins: Joe Schenck, Dr. Fager, Sewickley, Private Zone, and Imperial Hunt. All five horses have two wins each. In 1990, jockey Angel Cordero Jr. picked up his sixth career win at the the Vosburgh Stakes, a record that still stands today.
Winning the race earns an automatic bid to race in the Breeders' Cup Sprint as part of the Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" Challenge Series.
