Woodbine Mile Race History
Established in 1988, the Woodbine Mile is run each year at the Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Canada. The race regularly fields some of the best turf horses, with many winners also counting Champion Turf Horse awards among their career accomplishments. Among the past winners and Champion Turf Horses include Izvestia, Quiet Resolve, Soaring Free, Leroidesanimaux, Rahy's Attorney, Wise Dan (2 time race winner and champion), Tepin (2 time champion), World Approval, and Starship Jubilee.
With is back to back wins in 2012 and 2013, Wise Dan is the only horse that has notched more than one win at the Woodbine. His wins came in his spectacular five and six-year-old seasons where he was not only named American Champion Male Turf Horse, but also American Champion Older Male Horse and American Horse of the Year. To this day, he is the only horse to win the same three Eclipse Awards in consecutive years.
Jockey John R. Velazquez has recorded a record five wins at the Woodbine Mile, while trainer Neil D. Drysdale holds a record four wins himself.
As part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series, horses that take home first place gain automatic entry into the Breeders' Cup Mile.
