Zenyatta Stakes Race History
The Zenyatta Stakes is a Grade II race run each year at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, CA. Inaugurated as the Lady's Secret Handicap, in 2012 the race was renamed to honor 3 time winner Zenyatta, who still happens to hold the race speed record and is tied for most wins overall with 3 (a record shared with Beholder).
Beholder and Zenyatta are two of the races most distinguished previous winners. Zenyatta is well known for her mesmerizing 2008 and 2009 seasons, where as a four-year-old she completed an undefeated campaign with an incredible last-to-first win at the Breeders' Cup Distaff. Her five-year-old season saw more of the same when she entered the Breeders' Cup Classic as the only female in the field and took home a victory, becoming the first mare to with the Classic and the first horse to win two different Breeders' Cup races.
Beholder is a four time American Champion and has three Breeders' Cup wins to her name, including the 2016 Breeders' Cup Distaff where she defeated Songbird by a nose. With that win, Beholder joined Goldikova as one of two horses to win three Breeders' Cup races.
With his fifth win in 2014, Mike E. Smith became the all time winningest jockey, while there are currently four trainers tied for the record for most wins: John Shirreffs, John W. Sadler, Richard Mandella and Bob Baffert. All four trainers have four wins each.
As part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series, winners are automatically entered to race in the Breeders' Cup Distaff.
