5 athletes who would make amazing WWE superstars

Terrific athleticism and a sense of showmanship are necessary ingredients for becoming a WWE superstar. After much searching we've found five athletes who could make the transition from their current sport to a career in the ring. 

Rob Gronkowski

Rob Gronkowski is no stranger to the WWE. He's appeared at WrestleMania in the past, and last month he won the 24/7 Championship at the annual pay-per-view event.

Gronkowski spent nine seasons as tight end of the New England Patriots before going into retirement following the 2018 season, which ended with the Patriots winning their sixth Super Bowl championship. 

"Gronk" has since come out of retirement. He was traded from the New England Patriots in April and reunited with quarterback Tom Brady as the newest members of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Gronkowski has built an impressive list of accomplishments in football, from Super Bowl titles to Pro Bowl selections. He has everything you’d want in a WWE superstar, most notably a gregarious personality, which would make him a fan favorite on the mic.

Brad Marchand

Zdeno Chara is a tempting choice because he’s a 6-foot-9, 250 lb behemoth. However, Brad Marchand is an even better pick because he's the most hated player in hockey.  

He’s licked opposing players during scrums, run afoul of the league on multiple occasions, and is known for his constant trash talk. In other words, he's the ultimate heel.

He’d be a perfect fit for the wrestling ring. Not many have such an innate ability to just completely get under the skin, to play the villain. 

Nate Diaz

Nate Diaz has amassed a 21-12 record in the Octagon throughout his mixed-martial arts career, but last fall he entered into a bit of a feud with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, who rose to fame during his time in the WWE. 

Diaz wasn’t happy that The Rock presented the BMF Championship belt to Jorge Masvidal after a controversial medical stoppage to a fight between Diaz and Masvidal in UFC 244. 

Diaz had some choice words toward The Rock immediately following the event. The Rock had a rather diplomatic response that certainly wasn’t in keeping with his on-stage wrestling persona. But anytime there’s even the hint of a feud that involves a legend from the ring, we like to think that could one day translate into part of the show that is the WWE.

Enes Kanter

Enes Kanter of the Boston Celtics isn’t hiding his desire to enter the WWE after his career in the NBA is over. 

In fact, the 28-year-old center has already said publicly that he has had offers from the WWE, and has appeared in the ring before. 

You’ll recall last September that he, um, had a run-in with 24/7 Championship holder R-Truth, knocking him to the ground and pinning the champ to win the title, before revealing his Celtics jersey to WWE fans in New York. 

Kanter’s reign as champ didn’t even last 30 seconds. Much to the delight of the New York faithful. 

Jose Bautista

We appreciate a knack for the theatrical, and Jose Bautista certainly gave us that during his time with the Toronto Blue Jays. 

Standing at home plate, and flipping his bat high into the air after crushing a home run – in an elimination playoff game, no less – might’ve gone against the unwritten code of baseball, but isn’t that the type of dramatics WWE fans crave? 

He can play the villain, and it took only one act for fans and players from the Texas Rangers to get all riled up over Bautista’s antics. 

Now, let’s see how the WWE does it.
