All Stakes Pick 3 for Charles Town on Saturday
A total of 10 stakes races for West Virginia-bred runners will make up the Saturday card at Charles Town. I will highlight a three-race sequence that is of interest to me on the big night of racing.
Race 7 Wager
$5 Pick 3: 5,6 with 3,7 with 2,5 ($40)
Race 7 – Cavada Breeders’ Classic S.
The seven-furlong affair for fillies and mares attracted a cast of seven, and I will side with the pair of morning-line choices to get my ticket started. Defending champ #5 Hessica (5-2) has been in good form for more than one year and comes off of a pair of wins on the course this summer. Kristy Petty trainee is a six-time winner at the distance and will rally off the hot early tempo under Antonio Lopez.
The fleet #6 Overnight Pow Wow (2-1) is 6-for-9 on the surface and was a daylight allowance victress in her latest showing. She will face her elders in the dash, but the gray sophomore has done well with similar types in the past and will be the one to catch early beneath Reshawn Latchman.
Race 8 – Sam Huff Breeders’ Classic S.
The $300,000 event will go through #7 Jubawithatwist (3-5) for Petty. Gray gelding is a multiple stakes victor on the oval, and his lone prior run beyond eight panels resulted in an eight-length allowance romp in June. He gave a nice account of himself with a fourth against some talented open foes in his latest venture and will be formidable with anything resembling that showing.
#3 Muad’dib (6-1) was runner-up in the contest last campaign and will be the one to hold off if the race falls apart in the stretch. One of two Jeff Runco trainees in the field, the seven-year-old is a 16-time winner on the strip and will have Angel Cruz in the stirrups.
Race 9 – Roger Ramey Distaff S.
A group of 10 fillies and mares will travel 1 1/8 miles in the $75,000 tilt. Anthony Farrior’s #2 Someday Is Today (9-2) romped in the race in 2023 and can’t be ignored despite having just one subpar effort under her belt this campaign. Carpe Diem six-year-old runs her best going long and is a nice price with Jeiron Barbosa in the silks.
#5 Foxy Sista (7-2) ran into a fine winner going short most recently and rates a good chance with an expected move forward on the stretch-out in distance. The Michael Jones pupil was an 11-length allowance heroine in her last route attempt, and if she runs to that race, then the five-year-old will be formidable late under the guidance of Carlos Lopez.
