Australian harness racing: Redcliffe rolls again

Australian harness racing is back at Bet America tonight, June 10, at 11 p.m ET, which is Thursday afternoon, June 11, at Redcliffe Harness Racing Club in Queensland. 

Let's dive in a take a look at the nine-race card.

Race 1

Mitch Dawson’s #2 Faireachdainn, far overdue for a Dawson barn member, will try again this week, and after being well backed and failing again, the sophomore may offer a bright price for his first win.

In only her fifth start, #5 Duchess Downunder returns to Redcliffe after no luck at Albion. She showed some spunk at Redcliffe and has every right to improve.

Race 2

Another field of 2-year-olds to quiz punters. Two fillies by Roll With Joe get our eye in a short field of restless students of the pace.

The best of the two for us seems to be #1 Amarone. Her first start was at Redcliffe, where she faltered in the death seat, and she should not be blamed for the loss. She was strong, though out of the money, next at Albion. She is right in the spot to win now.

First-time starter #3 Sherbets Choice is American-bred, by Betterthancheddar, and should be good from the start.

Race 3

Best at Redcliffe, the scene of her most recent win, #2 Elle Jay had wheel issues with another in the field and could not to recover from the loss of ground it caused. The Pet Rock gal is a notch above the others.

I don’t see many Jet Laag products any more, but here is #5 Somewhereinheaven. The grey mare comes from the line of Laag, a popular and productive pacer and sire, who passed on the white genes.

Somewhereinheaven is a 7-year-old who has way more experience than her foes here. 

Race 4

This field will go a bit farther around the oval, which could suit #2 Kid Calvert. The speedy son of Badlands Hanover won his most recent race at Redcliffe, when he saved all of his speed for a clear path in the sprint lane to wipe up the field. Even on the outside with cover, he could have plenty left to sprint home first.

#4 Wecanonlyhope made more moves than a bad chess player in her recent race at Redcliffe, and if she makes only half as many this time, she should put herself in the thick of things.

Race 5

$5 Miss Giulietta, is a sophomore with a future.

The filly has had a rough three races before this, all at Redcliffe. Trained by local Bianca Hooper, Miss Giulietta took to the outside a few times, lost precious ground, and has had too many unfortunate contacts with foes while racing. Any smooth journey could amount to her third win in an unlucky 13 starts.

#4 Looks Just Right comes out of a good race. Those credentials could easily put her in place here for John McMullen. 

Race 6

Lola Weidemann’s #7 Ima Regal Jet was challenged strongly for the lead last time out at Redcliffe and she didn't give in. She won last at Marburg, with a tough trip, and returns to Redcliffe with a smart chance. 

The Dawson boys’ #5 Ritchie Bee attracted punters last time out but never truly got started. He tried to make up for it late by going wide but disappointed backers. Gate speed would help this time.

Race 7

Persistently in the top three at the finish line, #2 Cannan catches the eyes of punters but still awaits some journey luck to leave a field behind.

She was sloppy last time at Redcliffe, caused a driver fine, and wobbled about in a start before that. A straight pace close up could do it for Murray Thomas’ Sportswriter gelding.

The Dawson boys’ #3 Maywyns Jewel comes from the Cannan race, where she was stifled by a big brush that lost her important positioning.

Race 8

#8 CC Jones has a second-row spot with instant cover. Last time out, he had some push but wound up in the death seat. Local Donny Smith has a sharply bred Australasian contender here, who usually grinds his way through races.

From the Forrest Skipper bloodline, #3 Mo Jarney enjoys taking control early for Peter Greig (in the bike as well as trainer) but has not maintained control since March, when he guided his field all the way around and stayed afloat at the wire. That kind of trip looms boldly here.

Race 9

Whatever happened to #1 Camroller last time at Albion is debatable. He watched the field from behind for more than a half, before any boost of power, and much to the dismay of strong supporters, his attempt to get a good finishing spot in the stretch, though most of the field was collapsing, failed. Stephanie Graham’s gelding comes back to Redcliffe where a reverse style is more likely. 

Ben Battle is on the warpath pacing with #6 Trunkey Digger, who is looking for a Redcliffe win after good attempts at Albion. The Rock N Roll Heaven mare can take some turns wide, if she doesn’t start at it too early.
