How to bet the British Columbia Derby

A full field of 12 three-year-olds will go postward in the Saturday feature at Hastings, the $125,000 British Columbia Derby (G3). #11 J Dutton was a clear second in the Canadian Derby (G3) at 1 1/4 miles in his latest venture and will cut back to nine panels in his second local appearance. Bred in the Golden State, the gelded son of Smiling Tiger was based in southern California before being transferred to conditioner Robert Anderson, and the bay has performed well in his first pair of outings since the barn change. He will never be far back with Antonio Reyes in the silks.

#2 August Rain lived up to his favored status when rallying home a 2 3/4-length winner of the Canadian Derby (G3) in his latest offering. Trained by Barbara Heads, the son of Sungold shows a 9-5-1-2 record on the Hastings surface and is a neck shy of being unbeaten from four career attempts at a route of ground. The chestnut often displays a measure of early speed, and I don’t expect him to have as much to do at the top of the lane in this endeavor. Regular pilot Amadeo Perez will be in the irons once again.

#4 Diocles didn’t run his best race over a sloppy surface last time out, but the gelding had performed well in a pair of stakes tries going long in advance of that and rates a chance at a fair number on this occasion. The Counterforce gelding possesses a nice turn of foot, and he will be a late danger if he runs to his swift bullet morning drill on Sept. 7. The Pat Jarvis trainee will have Kerron Khelawan in the stirrups.

I don’t expect #6 Westminster to upset the cast, but the maiden is talented and could make the frame at a healthy number. The Bolt d’Oro gelding seems to be better going long, and he also has the gate presence to be forwardly placed from the opening bell, too. The exotics threat will have Christopher Mamdeen on board.
