How to bet the Miss Grillo Stakes
Editor's note: Due to significant rainfall, Aqueduct has postponed the Miss Grillo (G2) to Oct. 6 and transferred Sunday's four undercard turf races to the main track. The Pick 6, featuring a carryover of $83,912, has been moved to Thursday.
The Miss Grillo will be redrawn on Wednesday.
Trainer Chad Brown will aim for his 10th win in the $200,000 Miss Grillo S. (G2) at Aqueduct on Sunday when he saddles three of the 12 juvenile fillies in the field. The turf event serves as a Breeders’ Cup "Win and You’re In" contest, with the winner receiving an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) at Del Mar on Nov. 1.
Miss Grillo Wagers
The 1 1/16-mile affair is stacked with fine prospects throughout the cast, but in the end Brown will be in the winner's circle with one of his entrants yet again. #8 Opulent Restraint is the Brown trainee that I am most intrigued with. By Dubawi, the January foal was heavily backed on debut at Saratoga on July 28 but could only muster a fourth-place result as the 7-10 favorite. She returned on Sept. 1 at the same venue and came through with a half-length tally over good going.
Opulent Restraint has posted a pair of useful half-mile morning drills in the interim, and while she has yet to deliver a "wow" performance, I do expect her to handle this class rise and deliver her best race to date. Regular rider Irad Ortiz Jr. has the assignment, and he will have the gray near midpack to the top of the stretch before wearing down her foes late.
A pair of fillies coming from Kentucky Downs are very viable threats in my opinion, led by Juvenile Fillies S. heroine #3 May Day Ready. The bay daughter of Tapit lit up the tote board with a rallying debut score at the Spa at first asking, and she proved that she was no fluke when dominating her foes late in her stakes bow most recently. The Joseph Lee charge is a May foal with further improvement in her, and I feel that she is a must use with Frankie Dettori retaining the ride.
#4 Correto was a decisive winner in her seven-furlong unveiling in the Bluegrass State in a race where the runner-up was 4 3/4 lengths clear of her nearest pursuer. The Calumet homebred displayed a nice measure of tactical speed in her lone run to date and will presumably always be in range on the move to 1 1/16 miles on Sunday. This barn is often better with horses having some experience, and she seems poised to give a nice account of herself in the affair beneath Jorge Ruiz.
