Dallas Cowboys Team History

Washington Redskins owner George Preston Marshall had a strangle hold on Southern professional football for quite some time. With the folding of the Dallas Texans, the Redskins were the furthest Southern professional football franchise in the United States. After a falling out with the Washington Redskins band, the band leader of the Redskins sold the rights to the team’s fight song to a man named Clint Murchison, Jr. who wanted to create an expansion franchise in Dallas. After acquiring the rights to the Washington song, Murchison barred Washington from using the song at football games and exchanged the rights to the song for the ability to vote for an expansion franchise in Dallas, much to the chagrin of George Preston Marshall. And thus, the Cowboys were born and so was their rivalry with Washington.

In 1989 the Cowboys traded veteran running-back Herschel Walker to the Minnesota Vikings for a set of five veteran players. While they were coming off a franchise-worst 1-15 record, the Cowboys parlayed the Herschel Walker deal into enough success to earn the trade a nickname of “The Deal”. The 1990s brought in a mix of Tom Landry era talents and Jimmy Johnson players creating a roster that consisted of Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Darren Woodson, and Michael Irvin. In 1991 the team replaced Dave Shula with Norv Turner at the Offensive Coordinator role and the team defeated the Buffalo Bills 52-17 in Super Bowl XXVII.

After their Super Bowl victory the Cowboys’ head coach, Jimmy Johnson, expressed friction with the team’s owner and resigned from America’s football team. Jerry Jones called up Oklahoma Sooners coach Barry Switzer to take over the Cowboys, and the team added All-Pro Cornerback Deion Sanders to help them defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XXX. Following that Super Bowl the Cowboys lost Michael Irvin to a five game suspension and their team began to split up. Following a 6-10 season, Switzer resigned as the Cowboys coach in 1997.

The 2000s and 2010s have been steady for the Dallas Cowboys, but the franchise has not made significant inroads to make a serious run at the Super Bowl. With the retirement of long-time QB Tony Romo, the Cowboys are seeking a new foundation in the hands of Dak Prescott and emerging star Ezekiel Elliot.

Dallas finished the 2017 season with a record of 9-7 SU and 8-7-1 ATS.
