Pick 4 of the Week: Turfway Park Wednesday
A trio of Pick 4 wagers are offered on the Wednesday card at Turfway Park, and I will take aim at the middle one that begins in Race 4. The sequence consists of a pair of maiden sprints, as well as two claiming tussles, and each of the challenging events offers a bit of intrigue to me. https://x.com/TwinSpires/status/1879243720622502039
Race 4 Wager
50-cent Pick 4: 3,7 with 1,4,5,6 with 1,2,3 with 7,9,10 ($36)
Race 4 – Claiming
Fillies and mares will run one mile in the $75,000 claiming tilt in a demanding opening leg. Morning-line choice #7 Vino Rosato (5-2) came home swiftly in a win on the strip against a bit softer on December 6, and anything resembling that performance will make the four-year-old a major presence in the stretch. This Christopher Davis pupil is a two-time winner locally and will be moving into contention late under Abel Cedillo.
#3 Isa Lei (8-1) is far from consistent, but in a race with no pace at all, the daughter of Midnight Storm might dictate the action from the opening bell. Richard Estavanko is a winner on the course and could get brave late if she clears early.
Race 5 – Maiden Claiming
An overflow field is entered for the six-furlong heat. I don’t have an especially good feel for the dash and will spread with a few of the contenders in the second leg. #1 Temple City Magic (10-1), #4 Low Key Flex (5-1), #5 G’day Lady (8-1), and #6 Frosty Tale (9-2) will make the ticket.
Race 6 – Maiden Special Weight
A manageable field of eight will vie in the sprint. #2 Timetomakemischief (8-1) appeals to me at a healthy price for Whit Beckman. The Into Mischief five-year-old will race as a gelding for the initial time, and he exits a swift race on the Churchill dirt most recently. I expect the bay to appreciate the move to the Tapeta with Corrales riding him in his third appearance since 2023.
#1 Thunder Appeal (5-2) ran into an impressive winner on the Fair Grounds turf in his second showing and is the likely one to beat for Wesley Ward. The Air Force Blue gelding will save ground throughout with Walter Rodriguez in the stirrups. #3 Theismann (10-1) is a wildcard in his first run for Peter Eurton off the long layoff, but the expensive yearling purchase has good value and is worth including. The five-year-old flashed good early foot in two dirt runs in California last campaign and has worked steadily in preparation for his return.
Race 7 – Claiming
The 6 1/2-furlong heat for fillies and mares closes out the sequence, and a well-matched field of 11 will head to post. I’ll go three-deep in the affair, with #9 Tizzy Jojo (9-2) my slight top selection. The Tim Eggleston trainee was a smart runner-up at the starter allowance levels on the Tapeta two back and is a good fit with her top showing.
I consider #7 When’s Forever (10-1) to be a must-use at her morning-line number. The Forever d’Oro filly showed late interest following a poor break in her local bow, and the bay will be much closer to the tempo on Wednesday in her second run over the oval. I like the rider change to Rafael Hernandez, as well. The Aaron West-trained #10 Secret Glenda (3-1) has big early speed and a measure of back class. The Midshipman chestnut owns a win on the oval and will be formidable with her best beneath Abel Cedillo.
