2017 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile Preview and Picks

October 8th, 2017

The 2-day Breeders'  Cup Racing Festival takes place at Del Mar this year. The races are on Nov. 3 and Nov. 4.

This blog is all about the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile that takes place on Nov. 3. I don't need to see post-positions before analyzing the race. I also don't need to see post-positions before making my picks.

I've seen enough to know exactly how I'm going to play the BC Dirt Mile on Nov. 3. Check out my preview and picks for the 2017 BC Dirt Mile!

1. Accelerate

The four-year-old sired by Lookin At Lucky has the pedigree to run in the 1 1/4 mile Breeders' Cup Classic. I don't blame trainer John Sadler and owner Hronis Racing LLC for going for the $2 million purse in the B Dirt Mile, though.

How could I? In his last, Accelerate proved that he doesn't truly appreciate 1 1/4 miles. He'll have a big shot of upsetting both Sharp Azteca and Mor Spirit in the Dirt Mile on Nov. 3. Accelerate thrives at Del Mar. Home track advantage could mean something in this year's BC because the races take place so close to the ocean.

2. Sharp Azteca

Since Mor Spirit beat Sharp Azteca in the Grade 1 Metropolitan, the son of Freud has run off 2 impressive Grade 1 wins. He won the G3 Monmouth. He won the G2 Kelso. Both were sharp, terrific wins. He should be closer to Accelerate, or possibly even on the lead, on Nov. 3.

I don't see the closers catching either Sharp Azteca or Accelerate. Sharp Azteca, like Accelerate, can cruise on the front end. Neither horse expends too much energy on the lead.

3. Mor Spirit

Mor Spirit's closing kick is phenomenal. If Accelerate and Sharp Azteca get into a speed duel, he's the obvious winner. The problem I'm going to have with backing Mor Spirit is that his odds could be down to 8/5, or possibly 6/5 to win the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.

4. Practical Joke

He displayed an unbelievable closing kick in the Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial at 7 furlongs in his last. Takaful got away with a soft first quarter in 22.60. Practical Joke beating Takaful was legitimate because the frontrunner finished second. No other horse in the race closed.

I'm using all 4 in my late Pick 4 play on the day. I'll be using Accelerate on top in all exotic bets. I'll also have a large win bet on Accelerate.
