2022 Belmont Stakes contenders and official morning line odds

June 7th, 2022

We the People, a newcomer to this year's classic picture, was installed as the 2-1 morning line favorite in Saturday's $1.5 million Belmont S. (G1) over 1 1/2 miles. Victorious in the 1 1/8-mile Peter Pan (G3) on May 14 by a wide margin over a sloppy track, We the People looms as the lone speed and will break from post 1.

Trainer Todd Pletcher, who has won the Belmont three times, will saddle 5-2 second choice Mo Donegal and the filly Nest. Mo Donegal, the Wood Memorial (G2) winner, finished fifth in the Kentucky Derby (G1) after a wide rally.

Ashland (G1) winner Nest, second in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) in her most recent start, will look to become the second filly trained by Pletcher to win the Belmont. Rags to Riches broke a century-long drought for fillies in the Belmont when defeating eventual Horse of the Year Curlin in the 2007 "Test of the Champion."

Rich Strike, who pulled off the biggest upset in modern Kentucky Derby history last month at 80-1, returns to racing after skipping the Preakness (G1). Rich Strike was made the 7-2 third choice.

The only other horse in the field of eight listed at single digits on the morning line is Creative Minister. A winner of an allowance on the Kentucky Derby Day card at Churchill, the Kenny McPeek trainee next finished third in the Preakness behind Early Voting and Epicenter, both of whom are passing on the final leg of the 2022 Triple Crown.
