With just two career races under his belt, Taiba — trained by Tim Yakteen — has won both, the Santa Anita Derby (G1) and a six-furlong maiden special weight sprint. Bob Baffert was Taiba's previous conditioner, before he transferred the chestnut to Yakteen in early March.

Beginning in 2013, the year the Road to the Kentucky Derby points system was introduced, the post-time favorite won six straight races, starting with Orb (2013) and ending with Justify (2018). In 2019, Improbable went off as the 4-1 favorite and finished fourth. In 2020, heavy favorite Tiz the Law was bested by Authentic and landed in second place, and in 2021, Essential Quality finished third.
