2022 Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 1, Sire Future Wager on tap

The first of five Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW) pools begins Thursday at noon and runs through Thanksgiving weekend until Sunday at 6 p.m. (all times ET).

Fans will have the opportunity to bet on 22 individually named horses in Pool 1, as well as two broader options: the mutuel field of "All Other Colts and Geldings from the 2019 Foal Crop," projected to be the heavy favorite with an even-money morning line, and a more outside-the-box angle of "All Fillies from the 2019 Foal Crop."

Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Corniche is not an individual betting interest in Pool 1 because he is trained by Bob Baffert, who is suspended by Churchill Downs Inc. and thereby not eligible to run horses in the Kentucky Derby. Thus Corniche, and such high-profile stablemates as Messier and Rockefeller in the Baffert barn, are relegated to the mutuel field of "All Others."

The main individual interests listed in Pool 1 are Champagne (G1) winner Jack Christopher, who was scratched from the Breeders' Cup Juvenile with an injury, underwent surgery, and is slated to return to training in early 2022; the respective second, third, and fourth from the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, Pappacap, Giant Game, and Commandperformance; Breeders' Futurity (G1) hero Rattle N Roll; and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) runner-up Tiz the Bomb, who is expected to take on fellow Pool 1 interests Classic Causeway, Howling Time, and Smile Happy in Saturday's Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) at Churchill Downs. 

Running at the same time with Pool 1 of the KDFW is the one and only Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager. Fans can bet on the stallion(s) they believe have chances to sire the 2022 Kentucky Derby winner. The mutuel field of "All Other Sires" figures to be popular at 6-1 on the morning line, but Quality Road (sire of Corniche) will have supporters at 8-1. Leading first-crop sire Gun Runner, Triple Crown star American Pharoah, and such prolific patriarchs as Into Mischief and Tapit are also individual betting interests.
