2022 Preakness news and workouts roundup

May 17th, 2022

The historic $1.5 million Preakness S. (G1) is taking place on Saturday at Pimlico, which means it’s time to start analyzing the entries, reviewing the pre-race workouts, and counting down the minutes until post time.

Let’s get up to speed with a quick roundup of Preakness news and notes:

2022 Preakness Stakes entries

It was announced last week that upset Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Rich Strike is skipping the Preakness to focus on the Belmont S. (G1), which means for the third time in four years, the Derby winner won’t pursue the second leg of the Triple Crown.

In Rich Strike’s absence, nine horses have entered the Preakness. Post positions were drawn on Monday afternoon, leaving the field (with morning line odds) as follows:

1. Simplification (6-1)
2. Creative Moment (10-1)
3. Fenwick (50-1)
4. Secret Oath (9-2)
5. Early Voting (7-2)
6. Happy Jack (30-1)
7. Armagnac (12-1)
8. Epicenter (6-5)
9. Skippylongstocking (20-1)

Preakness workouts

Early Voting: The Wood Memorial (G2) runner-up wrapped up his Preakness preparations by breezing a bullet five furlongs in 1:00 3/5 on Friday at Belmont Park.

Epicenter: The Kentucky Derby runner-up stayed sharp by breezing an easy half-mile in :50 2/5 on Monday at Churchill Downs.

Happy Jack: Exiting a 14th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, Happy Jack is forgoing a timed workout in advance of the Preakness.

Fenwick: Seeking to rebound from a last-place finish in the Blue Grass S. (G1), Fenwick clocked five furlongs in 1:00 4/5 on Friday at Churchill Downs.

Secret Oath: The Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner is following Armagnac’s lead and enters the Preakness without any official workouts since scoring her signature victory.

Simplification: The Kentucky Derby fourth-place finisher is opting to take things easy in the Preakness leadup and hasn’t recorded a timed workout since before the Derby.

Skippylongstocking: The stretch-running Wood Memorial (G2) third-place finisher fired off a fast workout on Friday at Palm Meadows, getting five furlongs in a bullet :59 3/5.
