2022 Triple Crown Schedule: key dates, TV schedule and live stream

The 2022 Triple Crown, comprised of the Kentucky Derby (G1), Preakness S. (G1), and Belmont S. (G1), spans a five-week period from early May through early June.

But preparations for the three-race series begin months earlier. The following is a breakdown of the 2022 Triple Crown schedule, including TV broadcast times and dates of lead-up events going back to 2021.

2021 Triple Crown race dates

Saturday, Sept. 18

The primary Road to the Kentucky Derby qualifying series begins with the Iroquois S. (G3). From 37 qualifying races, 18-20 horses will earn a spot in the Derby field. The exact number depends on whether horse(s) from the Japan and European series accept qualifying berths. 

Saturday, Sept. 25

The European Road to the Kentucky Derby qualifying series begins with the Royal Lodge S. (G2) in Newmarket, England, and the Beresford S. (G2) at the Curragh, Ireland. One spot in the Kentucky Derby starting gate is available from this seven-race series.

Thursday, Nov. 25

2022 Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 1 begins at 12:00 p.m., along with the 2022 Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager. Both pools remain open until 6:00 p.m. on Nov. 28.

Saturday, Nov. 27

The Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby qualifying series begins with the Cattleya Sho at Tokyo Racecourse. One spot in the Kentucky Derby starting gate is available from this series.

2022 Triple Crown race dates

Friday, Jan. 21

2022 Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 2 begins at 12:00 p.m. and remains open through 6:00 p.m. on Jan. 23.

Saturday, Jan. 29

Early nominations for the 2022 Triple Crown are due at a cost of $600. Only Triple Crown nominees are eligible to compete in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont.

Friday, Feb. 11

2022 Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 3 begins 12:00 p.m. and remains open through 6:00 p.m. on Feb. 13.

Friday, March 11

2022 Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 4 begins at 12:00 p.m., along with the 2022 Kentucky Oaks Future Wager and Kentucky Oaks/Derby Double Future Wager. The Derby pool closes at 6:00 p.m. on March 13; the Oaks and Double pools close at 6.30 p.m. on March 13).

Saturday, March 26

The Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby concludes with the Fukuryu at Nakayama Racecourse.

Monday, March 28

Late nominations for the 2022 Triple Crown are due at a cost of $6,000. After this point, the connections of horses not nominated must pay a supplemental nomination fee of $200,000 (Kentucky Derby), $150,000 (Preakness), or $50,000 (Belmont) at the time of final entry in order to compete.

Thursday, March 31

The European Road to the Kentucky Derby concludes with the Cardinal Conditions Stakes at Chelmsford City, England.

Thursday, April 7

2022 Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 5 begins 12:00 p.m. and remains open through 4.30 p.m. on April 9.

Saturday, April 16

The primary Road to the Kentucky Derby series ends with the Lexington S. (G3) at Keeneland.

Monday, May 2

The post position draws for the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks take place at 2:00 p.m.

Friday, May 6

Kentucky Oaks day at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The first race of the day is at 10:30 a.m.; post time for the Oaks is 5:51 p.m.

Saturday, May 7

Kentucky Derby day at Churchill Downs. The first race is at 10:30 a.m.; post time for the Derby is 6:57 p.m.

Tuesday, May 17

Post position draw for the Preakness takes place at 4:00 p.m.

Friday, May 20

Black-Eyed Susan S. (G2) day at Pimlico in Baltimore, Maryland.

Saturday, May 21

Preakness day at Pimlico. Post time for the Preakness is approximately 6:45 p.m.

Tuesday, June 7

Post position draw for the Belmont takes place at 11:00 a.m.

Saturday, June 11

Belmont day at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. Post time for the Belmont is approximately 6:45 p.m.
