$400 Fair Grounds tournament, $12,364 Gulfstream carryover

December 8th, 2024

A tournament at Fair Grounds and a Super High 5 carryover at Gulfstream Park are among the betting options for horseplayers to pursue this Sunday.

$400 Fair Grounds Turfway Handicapping Championship Qualifier

Bet your entire $200 bankroll across at least five races at Fair Grounds (minimum $20 per race) to climb the leaderboard in the $400 Fair Grounds Turfway Handicapping Championship Qualifier. Finish high enough in the standings, and you’ll win an entry into the Dec. 14 $2,000 Turfway Handicapping Championship.

Trainer Larry Rivelli is off to a hot start at Fair Grounds, going 4-for-7 (57%) so far. Perhaps he can pick up another win courtesy of #4 Toscano (3-1) in Race 4, a six-furlong $30,000 claimer for horses who have never won two races. The three-year-old gelding is exiting three straight allowances for New York-breds at Saratoga; in one of them he finished second with a 90 Brisnet Speed rating, by far the highest number in Sunday’s field.

Rivelli wins at a 31% rate with horses dropping into the claiming ranks for the first time, an angle that applies to Toscano. Tournament players should consider betting Toscano to win and/or keying him on top of #2 Concentration (7-2) in a cold exacta.

Gulfstream Park $12,364 Super High 5 carryover

No one solved the $1 Super High 5 on Saturday at Gulfstream Park, triggering a $12,364 carryover into Sunday’s card.

To win a share, you’ll have to decipher Race 11, a maiden special weight for fillies and mares racing 1 1/16 miles on turf. An overflow field of 14 (including two also-eligibles) has entered, and one horse we recommend using at a bit of a price is #10 Jam’s Paper Moon (6-1).

Jam’s Paper Moon has only run once. On the final day of 2023, the beautifully bred daughter of Oscar Performance rallied to finish fourth in a maiden special weight racing about 1 1/16 miles over the Fair Grounds turf course.

That turned out to be a deep race. The top three finishers all returned to win their next start. Even in defeat, Jam’s Paper Moon earned an 81 Brisnet Speed rating, higher than the par winning number (79) for Sunday’s conditions.

Is Jam’s Paper Moon a lock to win? Maybe not, but trainer Brendan Walsh wins at a 19% rate with horses returning from layoffs of 90 days or more, so there’s a good chance Jam’s Paper Moon will fire a strong shot in her return. Whatever you do, don’t leave her off the top of your tickets.

Good luck!
