A single to commence the Late Pick 4 at Fair Grounds

February 21st, 2020

An intriguing four-race sequence will conclude the nine-race card at Fair Grounds on Saturday. I am very interested in a contender in the opening leg of the late Pick 4, which could yield a few price horses in the middle legs.

Here is the play:

Race 6 -- Claiming

I will make an aggressive move with a single to kickstart the wager. Multiple stakes heroine #2 Is Too (5-1) is the play.

Midshipman mare has a tactical edge on her foes with good early presence, and her 2-for-3 mark on the course is a positive. Chestnut gets the nod to win in wire-to-wire fashion with Miguel Mena in the stirrups.

Race 7 -- Claiming

One-mile dirt endeavor for Louisiana-breds could yield a healthy price in a questionable field. #3 B Rasen (8-1), my top pick, lacks consistency but is more than capable on his best day. Haynesfield gelding gets a pass for a poor showing over a sloppy surface most recently.

The in-form #1 Rustic Vow (7-2), #6 Cameron Rules (20-1), #10 Dancehall Jack (3-1), and #11 Captain Tyree (4-1) deserve inclusion.

Race 8 -- Allowance

Feature on the card is a competitive turf fray that attracted a big field. There is not a logical single in the group, so I will spread with a few contenders. #2 Wings of Dawn (6-1), #4 Miss Mercken (10-1), #5 Morning Molly (8-1), #6 Makeme Dream (10-1), and #7 Red Rounder (8-1), are the ones.

Race 9 -- Maiden Special Weight

Eight will go to post in a one-mile turf endeavor. I will conclude the sequence with the favored pair. #5 Grand Isle Girl (5-2) was a nice runner-up on debut over a ‘good’ turf course and looms large with any kind of improvement. English Channel lass retains Colby Hernandez.

#6 Gifted Talent (2-1) closed to be second with the addition of blinkers last time out. Cajun-bred chestnut gets a rider upgrade to Beschizza, as well.

Suggested Wager

  • $.50-cent Pick 4: 2 with 1,3,6,10,11 with 2,4,5,6,7 with 5,6 ($25)
