Agent Di Nozzo dropped another bomb early on Saturday’s 2015 Kentucky Derby card, registering a 23-1 upset of the 4TH race, an $82,000 allowance over a mile.
The stakes-quality field was depleted by the scratches of Carve, Rocket Time, and Stealcase, but Agent Di Nozzo got a perfect setup to score a come-from-behind victory.
Lagging well behind the pace down the backside as even-money favorite Cat Burglar dueled through splits of :22 3/5, :45 and 1:09 1/5, Agent Di Nozzo began to pick things up around the final turn. Cat Burglar conceded the lead to Bradester approaching the eighth pole, but that one soon ran out of gas as Agent Di Nozzo charged alongside and won going away in a time of 1:34.99 over a fast track.
Ridden by Joe Rocco Jr., Agent Di Nozzo paid $49.20. The six-year-old Ghostzapper gelding is for owned by Robert and Lawana Low and is trained by Steve Margolis.
Cat Burglar, who looked well beaten when passed by Bradester, re-rallied between rivals to edge Bradester for second by a short margin.
Agent Di Nozzo is a two-time stakes winners, having taken the $70,000 Borgata at Delta Downs and the $101,900 Golden Bear at Indiana Downs back in 2013. He’s also placed in two editions of the Delta Mile, but had finished third, second, and seventh in three allowance attempts at the recently-concluded Oaklawn meet.
Agent Di Nozzo has now earned more than $440,000 from a line of 25-8-5-4.
