Ajs High Makes 2017 Debut at Remington Park
A short, but intriguing field of Quarter Horse stakes winners will compete
in Saturday’s $100,000 Sooner State Stakes (RG1) for Oklahoma-breds at Remington Park. The Oklahoma City racetrack has moved its traditional evening post time up to 3:45 pm (Central) to allow their fans the chance to see live Quarter Horse racing and enjoy the simulcast of the 143rd Kentucky Derby from Churchill Downs.
Ajs High will defend his title in the 400 yard feature. This will be the 2017 debut for the son of Apollitical Jess, who is trained by Charley Hunt, with regular rider, Stormy Smith in the irons. The Oklahoma-bred gelding has been on top of his game for the past three years, winning 13 of his 21 starts and earnings in excess of $700,000.
Known for his saddling paddock antics as a 2-year-old, the talented runner has matured and is all business once he gets into the starting gate. He defeated a classy field last October at Los Alamitos in the $350,000 Bank of America Challenge Championship (G1). He closed powerfully to edge the heavy favorite, BH Lisas Boy by a head. The Oklahoma-bred gelding earned a berth in the 440-yard, $600,000 Champion of Champions on December 10, where he ran fourth.

He will face five rivals in the Sooner State Stakes, including Valiant Rogue, a son of Valiant Hero, trained by AQHA champion conditioner Judd Kearl. His 3-year-old campaign was highlighted by a win in the prestigious Rainbow Derby at Ruidoso Downs. Another top contender is Sam Crow, who won the Mr Jet Moore stakes at Remington Park last month for trainer Trey Wood. Ricky Ramirez will ride and a victory on Saturday night would vault Sam Crow over the $1 million mark in career earnings. Regard With Respect with Larry Payne up; Ferrari James under Oscar Delgado and Vf Red Surprise and jockey James A. Flores complete the field.
