'All others' favored in KDFW Pool 2, Sire Future Wager

November 28th, 2022

The mutuel field of “All other three-year-old colts and geldings” closed as the 4-5 favorite in Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW) conducted over Thanksgiving weekend. Likewise, the “All other sires” option proved the popular choice at 5-1 in the Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager that ran concurrently from Thursday through Sunday evening.

Favored among the individual interests in Pool 2 was Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) hero Forte, who was pegged as the 10-1 choice on the morning line and finished at the same price. In Pool 1 during Breeders’ Cup week, he closed at 16-1.

Impressive Keeneland debut winner Extra Anejo, the 12-1 individual favorite in Pool 1, continued to receive plenty of support. He was the 13-1 second pick of the named contenders in Pool 2, just off his 15-1 morning line.

Loggins, who just missed to Forte in the Breeders’ Futurity (G1) and skipped the Breeders’ Cup, was backed into 19-1 from a 40-1 morning line. In Pool 1, he closed at 27-1, so the form boost courtesy of Forte helped.

Signator, a 39-1 chance in Pool 1, has been idle since his smart Aqueduct maiden score, but gained steam in Pool 2. Listed at 60-1 again on the morning line, he saw his price contract to 27-1. Giant Mischief, new to Pool 2 as an individual following a high-profile Keeneland allowance win, opened at 25-1 and inched up to 27-1. He was just a few dollars shy ($3,785) of the amount bet on Signator ($3,797) in the Win pool.

While the “All other males” option was in demand equally in Pools 1 and 2, closing at 4-5 in each, the “All other three-year-old fillies” attracted a bit more interest this time. A 37-1 proposition in Pool 1, the fillies’ mutuel field was bet down from 80-1 to 29-1 in Pool 2, likely due to Saturday’s smashing Golden Rod (G2) winner Hoosier Philly.

Similarly, Instant Coffee advertised himself by capturing Saturday’s Kentucky Jockey Club (G2), his odds shortening from an 80-1 morning line to 35-1 by the end of wagering Sunday. He had been a 93-1 shot in Pool 1.

In the only Sire Future Wager offered for the 2023 Kentucky Derby, top stallion Into Mischief appeared poised to threaten for overall favoritism before bettors ultimately stuck with “All others.” The perennial leading sire was the only individual in single digits at 7-1.

Responsible for Derby winners Authentic (2020) and Mandaloun (2021), Into Mischief had seven sons listed by name in Pool 2, most notably Extra Anejo and Giant Mischief. He is also the sire of Hoosier Philly.

Forte’s sire, Violence, came next at 11-1. Gun Runner, with three individuals in Pool 2 as well as good-looking maiden winners on Saturday’s “Stars of Tomorrow II” card at Churchill Downs, closed at 12-1.
